The UK Championship is set to give us nine days of thrilling action at the Barbican in York. All of the sport’s stars will be in action, including Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump. On the first day, defending champion Zhao Xintong suffered defeat. All eyes were on the return of Jimmy White as he made his return to the main draw, but he lost out to Ryan Day.

'Tremendous clearance' from Day against White

Thanks for joining us

We will be back at 12:45pm on Sunday with 2020 champion Neil Robertson taking on Joe Perry as last year's losing finalist Luca Brecel faces Lyu Haotian in the last 32.
Saturday November 12
13:00
  • Zhao Xintong 2-6 Sam Craigie
  • Mark Allen 6-4 Jordan Brown
19:00
  • Kyren Wilson 6-3 Matthew Selt
  • Ryan Day 6-2 Jimmy White

White 2-5 Day (24-77)

Tough red for White cueing off side cushion. Can't slot the object ball and this match is heading for its conclusion. White has had his chances tonight, but just came up short. Ryan Day with a warm embrace for Jimmy. Quite the occasion, but no fairytale finish. A 6-2 win for Ryan Day, who next meets Sam Craigie in the last 16.

White 2-5 Day (0-63)

Well, looked all over until Day misses red to middle pocket. 63 clear with possible 73 remaining on the table.

White 2-5 Day (0-63)

White forced to sit and suffer. Could be the end of the road for the six-time world finalist. Day closing in on victory.

White 2-5 Day (0-16)

Day has the chance he craves to finish off this match. Enough reds in open to ease himself into last 16..

White 1-5 Day (94-7)

Jimmy White fighting the good fight out there. Brilliant long red and this match is heading for 5-2. White certainly not giving up the ghost. 49 and 44 enough to bring the match back to 5-2.

White 1-5 Day (49-7)

Jimmy going for the 147 break, but ends up planting a red into a middle bag when potting black. A fine and rapid 49 from Jimmy. Chance of getting a second frame on board.

White 1-4 Day (0-105)

A brilliant break of 105 from Day and he leads 5-1. Jimmy must win the remaining five frames otherwise the gallant run ends tonight.

White 1-4 Day (0-75)

Day suddenly racing around the table like he is under no pressure. And he isn't really feeling any strain with Jimmy not scoring heavily enough. Another error by White and that is enough to cost him the frame.

White 1-4 Day (0-24)

White attempts a tough long red. Misses and gets dreaded double kiss on the same red. Chance then for Day to make a sizable contribution.

White 1-3 Day (24-62)

And there isn't as yellow and green disappear. A 4-1 lead for Day in the race to six. The Whirlwind in danger of blowing out here.

White 1-3 Day (24-57)

White needing two snookers after missing pink to left centre pocket. Looks like Day is heading 4-1 clear unless there is a remarkable turnaround on the colours.

White 1-3 Day (3-52)

Day breaks down on 47. Didn't see that coming, but White plays a poor safety shot and Day responds by slamming in a long red. But he misses a red to a top pocket after White escaped from a snooker. An attempt by a plant from Jimmy then goes horribly wrong.

White 1-3 Day (0-41)

Day is a very attacking player with a classy technique. Already feels like this could be heading 4-1 at this visit. Reds well placed to make this a one-visit kill. Jimmy paying the price for not scoring heavily enough so far.

White 1-3 Day (0-20)

Day punches in a fine long-range red. Brilliant shot that. And he is first to the punch after the restart.

Wilson 4-0 Selt

Kyren Wilson with breaks of 103 and 101 on his way to opening up a 4-0 lead against Turkish Masters finalist Matthew Selt. Long way back from that predicament.

White 1-2 Day (4-127)

Superb from Ryan Day. Poor safety shot by White and that costs you dearly at this level. A total clearance of 127 and a 3-1 lead.

White 1-2 Day (4-78)

In goes the black and he is back out for the reds. Chance of a century then for Dynamite. Frame well and truly over.

White 1-2 Day (4-49)

Really nice cueing from Day here to reach 48 with little fuss. Chance to punish White's safety error by making a frame-winning contribution. Looks handily placed to lead 3-1 at mid-session interval.

White 1-2 Day (4-1)

Safety error by White attempting to run safe off a red and he has presented Day with a wonderful chance to get his cue arm working.

White 1-2 Day (4-0)

Chance for Jimmy after another lovely long red, but he misses blue to middle. Not left much for Ryan to go at. Looks like a safety shot.

White 1-2 Day (0-0)

Jimmy looking very relaxed out there. Will feel better now that he has got that frame on the board. One more frame before the mid-session break.

White 0-2 Day (76-44)

A missed black by Day when he seemed poised to close out frame. Bad miss with black on the spot. What can White offer in response? Big moment coming up. And he has developed one red off the side cushion via another red. Jimmy needs yellow, green and brown. And in they go. A closing break of 55 does the job for Jimmy. He is back to 2-1 behind. That will boost his confidence.

White 0-2 Day (21-32)

Not much wrong with Jimmy's game from distance it must be said. Seeing the angles well enough until a cut to middle decides to stay above board.

White 0-2 Day (5-24)

Only 24 from Day before he breaks down. Cue cries of 'C'mon Jimmy'...But nothing doing as black stays out.

White 0-2 Day (0-16)

Brilliant red from distance by Dynamite at outset of this third frame. The British Open champion would dearly love to start scoring after edging two scrappy frames.

White 0-1 Day (36-64)

White with chance of a long blue. Could be a frame winner, but ends up being a frame loser. Blue falls perfectly for Day after missing green bag and he slots blue and pink to lead 2-0. Could easily be 2-0 White. Those are the tough kicks in elite snooker.

White 0-1 Day (36-53)

All sorts going on, but White leaves his opponent chance to slot final red which he duly converts. Blue on side cushion is only problem ball and he needs it.

White 0-1 Day (36-37)

Day butchers a red when he looked likely to push on. That is a surprise. White has chance to move clear in this frame on the scoreboard. Gets a snooker after blue bounced back out of the middle pocket. Spot of good fortune.

White 0-1 Day (32-24)

Only 23 in response from the Welshman. Quickly out of position and a red along top cushion was well off the target. Not much safety being played out there.

White 0-1 Day (32-9)

White taking chances with a rest shot. Always looked like he was pushing the boat out. And the boat hasn't come back in as he misses red by a fair bit. Day gifted an easy opener.

White 0-1 Day (21-1)

Another chance for White as Day attempts to drill in a long blue. Misses the potting angle and a reprieve for Jimmy here.

White 0-1 Day (20-0)

White with another excellent long red straight off the bat, but can only muster 14 before being forced to run safe. Day makes a safety blunder and this is a chance for Jimmy to score. But he makes a safety error trying to run up the table. Bad blunder there by Jimbo.

Zhao suffers shock exit

Here is the report from the afternoon action at the York Barbican. Zhao Xintong's title defence is over after he suffered a shock 6-2 defeat to Sam Craigie.

White 0-0 Day (57-61)

White with stunning shots on yellow, green and brown, but just fails to land on blue. Goes for the blue with rest, but just eludes him. Chance for Ryan to steal the frame. And he takes out blue, pink and black in style. A cool head, but that will feel like one that got away for White. Day into the lead.

White 0-0 Day (48-43)

Jimmy playing another fine shot to leave Day in another snooker. And White bangs in a long red with some ease from the Day escape. What a pot that is from the Whirlwind. Jimmy slots blue to lead by five heading for the colours.

White 0-0 Day (42-43)

So two reds left up. Both pretty safe and both are key to this opening frame. More cries of 'C'mon Jimmy'. The People's Champion responds by carting in a brilliant long red and then lays the snooker. Day fails first time off one cush.

White 0-0 Day (30-43)

Day into the lead by 14 points with three reds left, but life left in this frame as Day can't tuck home a red along the top cushion. White back at the baize.

White back in the snooker big time

'Come on Jimmy!' - White given standing ovation on main draw return at UK Championship

White 0-0 Day (29-8)

Former world No. 6 Day slots a lovely long red and pops in a blue to follow. White turned professional in 1980, the same year his opponent was born. The iconic White will be hoping for some vintage form tonight.

White 0-0 Day (29-1)

The cries of 'C'mon Jimmy' fill the night air in York as Day sees white hit middle jaw and come back down to the reds. Chance for White to score, but he breaks down on 29 as a red stays out from the Whirlwind. Groans are palpable as the 60-year-old Whirlwind returns to his chair. But Day can only make one in response. White looking for a decent safety to apply some pressure.

White 0-0 Day (0-0)

White comes out to an amazing reception from the York Barbican. A full house inside the arena as Jimmy emerges to 'The Boys Are Back In Town'. From Thin Lizzy to Thin JImmy. This could be a night to savour.

White 0-0 Day (0-0)

Welcome back to the action as Jimmy 'Whirlwind' White faces Ryan Day. Incredibly, it has been 30 years since White won his solitary UK title with a 16-9 win against John Parrott in Preston in the 1992 final. Kyren Wilson meets Matthew Selt in the other last-32 match, but tonight is all about White and Jimmy is back on the big stage.

C'mon Jimmy

We will see you back here for more live updates just before 7pm as the Whirlwind of old London town faces Ryan Day before a sell-out crowd in York.

Allen 6-4 Brown

And that will be that. Allen puts the finishing touches to the frame. He wins it (77-25) and is through to the last 16. A nice embrace by both men at the end. Classy afternoon of snooker at the Barbican.

Allen 5-4 Brown (62-25)

Looks like this could be the end. Brown escapes from snooker, but leaves red. Allen moving 36 points clear. Just needs one more red. And he produces a fabulous pot along top cushion. 37 clear with possible 35 remaining. Plays snooker behind yellow.

Allen 5-4 Brown (45-25)

This is a real tough frame of matchplay snooker. Allen moves further clear after Brown misses a tricky red along top cushion. Four reds left on the table, but Brown needs to escape from a snooker to hit one of them. Gets there the second time.

Allen 5-4 Brown (25-21)

A taut battle to determine who will win this tenth frame. All getting very edgy with both men well in the hunt for the last 16. Some nice safety on show to add to the tension.

Allen 5-4 Brown (6-21)

Shocker from Jordan as he breaks down on pink. Can't believe he has missed that. Did he get a kick? Chance for Allen to get ahead in frame he needs to progress.

Allen 5-4 Brown (0-13)

Superb red to a centre bag by Brown. First to the table then in the frame he requires to take this match to a deciding frame. All on the line now for both of these proud Northern Irish snooker players in York.

Zhao 2-6 Craigie

Sparkling 104 break from Craigie to finish and defending champion Zhao Xintong is out. A merited win for Craigie, who will meet Ryan Day or Jimmy White in the last 16.

Allen 5-3 Brown (30-59)

59 from Brown before he sees a pink stay out to centre pocket. Well, didn't expect that, but Allen misses the final red with the rest on the counter attack. Wasn't straightforward. That was virtual match ball. One red left up and Jordan can't sink it. Coming down to this red with all the colours on spots. Allen slots the long red, but misses brown to centre and immediately concedes. Back to 5-4. Drama at the Barbican.

Allen 5-3 Brown (0-39)

Jordan first to the punch in the ninth frame. Needs them all to stay alive in this event. Looks very controlled in this moment. Every chance to contribute a frame-winning knock in one visit.

Allen 5-3 Brown (105-1)

A superb break of 55 to finish off from Allen. Now needs one more frame to progress. Winner of this match will meet Kyren Wilson or Matthew Selt in last 16.

Zhao 2-5 Craigie

Defending champion Zhao could be heading out in the opening round. Craigie with breaks of 83, 78 and 69. Zhao missing his scoring boots at key time.

Allen 4-3 Brown (63-1)

Jordan tries a tough plant on reds. Doesn't quite get the angles right and that could be the end of this eighth frame. A tactical masterclass from Mark. And he is moving 5-3 clear against his close friend.

Allen 4-3 Brown (50-1)

A 10-minute joust without a ball being potted, but Allen clinging to that 39-0 lead for dear life. Brown slots a brilliant red at pace along top cushion, but then misses green attempting to return to scoring end. Allen could move further clear here. And does. Five reds with pink and black tied up. Looking very good for a 5-3 lead.

Allen 4-3 Brown (35-0)

35 from Allen before a cannon on reds goes wrong. Just the safety to follow. Allen certainly not afraid to scrap it out on the tactical side.

Allen 4-3 Brown (20-0)

Another untimely safety blunder by Brown and that presents Allen with chance to go to work again. This is starting to feel a little bit ominous for Jordan. Can't be gifting players like Mark Allen easy starters.

Allen 3-3 Brown (126-1)

Well, there we are. A 63 break from Allen and he moves within two frames of a last-16 spot. Has the mood shifted towards Allen? That is certainly the vibe one would suggest.

Allen 3-3 Brown (68-1)

49 from Allen as he can't land on a red from blue. That is frustrating, but safety error by Brown might well be the end for him in this frame. Should surely be a 4-3 advantage for Allen in race to six.

Allen 3-3 Brown (39-1)

Jordan with a lovely long red, but then misses the black off the spot. Can't be missing those in this company. What will Allen provide here? Bags black and rattles the reds with white. That will do nicely as cherries splatter. Could make a few at this visit.

Allen 3-3 Brown (7-0)

Both players deciding they've had enough of the stalemate in the seventh frame and we are heading for a re-rack. Brown tries to drop in red from distance, but fails to can it and Allen is presented with an easy opener.

Allen 3-3 Brown (0-14)

A threatening little bout of potting, but Jordan can't spring any reds free from potting the blue. A period of safety coming up.

Allen 2-3 Brown (113-6)

Fabulous level of play from Allen in this frame to manipulate the cue ball to his liking. Brown made a slight error and is set to witness his compatriot compile his second century of the match. 113 with minimal fuss and we move level again at 3-3. Difficult to call this match from here, but Allen is certainly right in stroke.

Allen 2-3 Brown (27-6)

Brilliant long red by Allen after Brown left the 2011 UK finalist with hand on table. Allen doesn't need a second invite as he drains long red before beginning to score some points in his trademark style.

Allen 2-3 Brown (6-6)

Brown throws his cue at a pot on red to a green pocket, but misses by a fair old distance. And he has handed Allen an easy opener. But Mark quickly out of position. So reprieve for Jordan.

Allen 2-2 Brown (0-83)

A fine 83 from Jordan to get his nose in front. Lovely stuff indeed. Perhaps Allen finding form has forced him to get into stride. Certainly focuses the mind.

Allen 2-2 Brown (0-74)

Much more like the man who lifted the Welsh Open last year with that 9-8 victory against Ronnie O'Sullivan. Looks like a one-visit kill in the offing. in goes red with the rest and he is out on the black. Drops in object ball and Brown is heading clear at 3-2.

Allen 2-2 Brown (0-36)

Brown back in touch it seems after losing his way a bit. Lovely little cannon to nestle on a red in the pack and this break is suddenly developing possibilities.

Allen 2-2 Brown (0-17)

Brilliant long red by Jordan at the outset of the fifth frame. Chance perhaps to clear his head at the break and reset for the second half of the match. Looking to get his cue arm working again.

Allen 2-2 Brown (0-0)

Zhao 2-2 Craigie

The other match on table one is delicately poised with the defending champion Zhao Xintong and world No. 47 Sam Craigie level at 2-2. Craigie with breaks of 83 and 78 to keep pace with Zhao.

Allen 1-2 Brown (124-1)

A 105 total clearance from Allen and he is level at 2-2 at the break. Classy stuff in the end from the world No. 9, who is right back in the driving seat here one suspects.

Allen 1-2 Brown (94-1)

Much, much more like it from Allen. Showing the form that delivered him back-to-back Northern Ireland Open titles. Looks for all the world like 2-2. Those first two frames will be quickly forgotten about when he has a cuppa at the mid-session.

Allen 1-2 Brown (47-1)

Allen in early with 19, but handed a reprieve as Brown can't hole a tough black. Well, what a result it would be for Allen to get out of this little mini-session at 2-2. Was all at sea, but suddenly sensing the chance to level matters.

The Whirlwind on his new routine

Allen 0-2 Brown (76-13)

Brown has had plenty of opportunities, but not taken them and this is what happens when you don't press on when your opponent is toiling. A break of 68 from Allen and that is more than good enough to snare his first frame of the day. Brown leads 2-1.

Allen 0-2 Brown (36-13)

Finally a chance for Allen to get some momentum in this match as break reaches 32. Has been a dreadful first few frames for him, but this might be the chance he needs to begin his recovery.

Allen 0-2 Brown (7-13)

Don't need to be far off the pace in snooker to be miles off it on the table. A red to yellow pocket down the table this time eludes Allen before Brown picks out red to green pocket. Delightful pot that one.

Allen 0-1 Brown (37-60)

Far from an epic frame, but Brown finally sees it through with Allen's attempt at snookers summing up his day. Off the boil and Brown suddenly two to the good. Allen trying to click into gear.

Allen 0-1 Brown (32-60)

So Allen needing a snooker and perhaps a minor miracle to level this match at 1-1. Brown with a lead of 28 points. Only 18 left up. Surely all over. Allen struggling badly so far.

Allen 0-1 Brown (23-53)

A turgid second frame with Brown adding only one red and missing a pink to yellow pocket. On we go here.

Allen 0-1 Brown (23-52)

Not exactly vintage form from either man, but Brown inching towards the winning post in second frame with two reds left up and 29 points the difference. Brown with so many chances to win this frame.

Allen 0-1 Brown (17-46)

Allen has been form man this season, but missing so many easy balls. Brown can't capitalise as he ends up sending a white into a pocket from a fine cut on a red. Is this the break Mark needs to make a big break?

Allen 0-1 Brown (6-38)

So far, so bad for Allen in this match. Brown with a rest shot missing a tricky black, but Allen then squanders a golden chance as red again steps up. Bad miss that one. Brown back at the table. Adds 24 before running safe. Allen sees a red to a centre pocket hit the jaws of pocket. Caught in a bit of a struggle at moment.

Allen 0-1 Brown (6-13)

Allen misses another black off spot after Brown was well off the potting angle on a red from distance. That is unexpected. Another chance for the qualifier to get ahead in the second frame as Allen is forced to digest his error.

Allen 0-0 Brown (1-84)

Brown is known as the Antrim Ferrari and is motoring through these balls with some ease. Misses a pink on 84 as century loomed, but he'll take another five breaks of 84 this afternoon. A lovely start to Saturday for Brown at the Barbican.

Allen 0-0 Brown (1-54)

Brown looking very comfortable with his surroundings at the York Barbican. He won the Welsh Open last year and would dearly love to claim this title. A full house enjoying this touch of snooker's air Jordan at the moment. Could be moving 1-0 clear.

Allen 0-0 Brown (1-22)

Lovely long red by Allen, but he can't make good on the early promise and Brown has chance to capitalise on that missed black off the spot.

How White turned back the clock

Nobody thought they'd hear cries of 'C'mon Jimmy' but that is exactly what you will hear tonight when he faces Ryan Day at 7pm.

Watch the moment White clears up to qualify for UK Championship

Welcome to the 46th UK Championship

All the snooker greats have won this event including Ronnie O'Sullivan seven times, Steve Davis six and Stephen Hendry five. The afternoon action in York sees Zhao Xintong begin the defence of his title against Sam Craigie with 2011 finalist Mark Allen meeting Jordan Brown before Jimmy 'Whirlwind' White faces Ryan Day 30 years after he lifted the event with a 16-9 victory over John Parrott in the 1992 final. Kyren Wilson meets Matthew Selt in the other evening encounter. First to six frames reaches the last 16. Let's get the boys on the baize.
----
It’s Triple Crown time as the UK Championship has arrived with all of snooker’s stars in action at the Barbican in York to see who will win the second biggest ranking event of the season.
Zhao Xintong is the defending champion, but will have a huge task to stop the likes of Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, Neil Robertson and Mark Selby knocking him off his perch. He begins the defence of his crown at 13:00 against Craigie.
Mark Allen is also in action against close pal Jordan Brown in a Northern Irish derby match also from 13:00. The opening day of snooker will all be about the return of Jimmy White to the main draw for the first time since 2010 when he takes on Ryan Day.
A major change to the format has seen the UK Championship revert to the traditional ‘tiered system,’ so the top 16 automatically qualified for the last 32, which began on Saturday, while everyone else played at least two matches to reach the final stages in York.
