UK Championship snooker as it happened – Jack Lisowski beats Hossein Vafaei, Shaun Murphy sinks Judd Trump

Updated 17/11/2022 at 22:01 GMT

Welcome to Eurosport's live updates of the 2022 UK Championship last 16 in York on Thursday. We've got a potential epic to kick things off as two former world champions go head-to-head in the battle to reach the last eight. Judd Trump meets Shaun Murphy in the afternoon with Shoot Out holder Hossein Vafaei confronting Jack Lisowski in the evening session.

'That is brilliant' - Murphy pots stunnung brown to win epic frame

Righto, that's us for tonight

Join us again tomorrow at 12.45pm GMT for Ding v O'Sullivan and Perry/Bingham v Ford.

Jack speaks

He's trying harder, so though he's not consciously focusing harder, he thinks he might be anyway. He loves having Ebdon around, he says, then shown some VT says the black to red in the final frame that we cooed over a few minutes ago was his best shot of the match. Otherwise, he reminds us that "it is what it is" - he's not wrong and, as James Wade the dart player taught us, "it isn't what it isn't".

On table two

Joe Perry 4-2 Stuart Bingham

Jack Lisowski beats Hossein Vafaei 6-2!

Jack's reaches the last eight here for the third year in a row, and he's never looked in better shape. That was a proper performance, and I can't wait to see his match with Murphy.

Lisowski 5-2 Vafaei (57-40)

Oh man, Hossein gets a nice little kiss that liberates the pink ... then misses the yellow by plenty! That was a very poor shot and the cue receives due punishment, then its owner receives a word from the ref. This is over.

Lisowski 5-2 Vafaei (55-33)

Oh wow, Jack bags a black to left corner then sends the white scuttling up the table to develop a red. Beautiful, beautiful behaviour, and in the seats, Ebdon looks satisfied. Jack smacks in the brown, slides over to the last red, along the bottom cushion ... but he jawses it! Can Hossein clear up, with blue and pink on opposite side cushions?

Lisowski 5-2 Vafaei (40-33)

Hossein treis one to the yellow pocket, almost pots it in right corner, and this might be curtains because he's left a starter for Jack.

Lisowski 5-2 Vafaei (31-29)

A poor positional shot forces Hossein into a think cut on the black ... and he sinks it very nicely indeed. But then he jawses a red to right corner, stopping himself from perpetrating further cue-abuse at the last second; but there's not much on for Jack, who plays a poor shot, leaving a double. Hossein misses it, thinks he's sunk the treble ... but he hasn't. Of the five remaining reds, only one is below the blue spot.

Lisowski 5-2 Vafaei (31-6)

All night, Jack's been great sending balls long, but the last frame is often the hardest to win and he misses a blue to the green pocket that if it goes down probably means the match. But it doesn't, so Hossein now needs to conjure a contribution with the three highest-value colours out of commission.

Lisowski 5-2 Vafaei (13-0)

So Hossein needs four straight; good luck with that, old mate. And as I type that, Jack takes the red at the point from middle to right corner - that is just lush - and sets about finishing the match. But to do that he'll need to break the pack, which he does ... and it works out nicely enough, reds everywhere but pink and black out of commission. He'd've took it.

On table two

Joe Perry 3-2 Stuart Bingham

Lisowski 5-2 Vafaei

A seven-and-a-half minute 101, and Jack's a frame away from a meeting with Shaun Murphy in the last eight.

Lisowski 4-2 Vafaei (71-0)

Nope, Jack sends a red to middle to sink the pink - no doubt Ebdon approves - and a few shots later this crcial frame is almost done.

Lisowski 4-2 Vafaei (25-0)

Eesh! Hossein, feart of leaving a red off the break, tries the Mark J break off the top cushion ... and somehow leaves on to middle! Jack drains it, breaks the pack off the black, and this feels like a lesson: if your natural game is taking attacking options, take attacking options. Hossein's a potter, he needs to pot. Meantime, Jack's on a maxi...

Lisowski 4-2 Vafaei

Yup, Hossein quickly closes out and this next frame is the crucial one: if Jack wins it, it's probably over; if he doesn't, it's game on.

Lisowski 4-1 Vafaei (0-62)

Pressure. Hossein misses a red to right corner and wallops the butt of his cue into the ground. Jack, though reprieves him but failing to nudge home via gentle swerve, and given how many balls are on, that should be the frame.

Lisowski 4-1 Vafaei (0-15)

OK, here goes. Jack misses a long red to left corner off the break, and the last time he handed Hossein a serious chance, he made a ton.

Lisowski 4-1 Vafaei

Hossein needs to play close to perfect snooker to stick in this; realtalk, his best isn't (yet) good enough to compete with Jack in this form.

Lisowski 3-1 Vafaei (63-2)

This is glorious stuff from Jack, a black cut in from tight to the side ... but is he on anything? Er, sort of. He takes on a cut-back red to left corner and misses it, just - but with safety in mind. Meantime, Peter Ebdon sits in the crowd taking copious notes, then Hossein controls a lovely starter to right corner ... only to miss the black! Ach! He leaves a simple starter, and Jack sets about making the frame safe.

Lisowski 3-1 Vafaei (24-1)

Hossein sinks a diagonal red to left corner - it's a good pot, but he catches it a touch thick, so winds up on nowt. Next, he tries a clip to right corner, which gets close; he looks to have covered it, but he hasn't covered the plant, which Jack executes with perfect touch - the balls weren't that close to one another. I brings him onto the black too, and Hossein will be worried because there are some pleasantly loose reds.

We go again!

On table two

Joe Perry 2-2 Stuart Bingham

On table two

Joe Perry 2-1 Stuart Bingham

Lisowski 3-1 Vafaei

Well done Hossein Vafaei! He's short of neither bottle nor belief, and the first scoring chance he gets, he spanks home a lovely 111 to keep him in the match at the interval. We'll be back in 15, with Jack still in the box seat.

Lisowski 3-0 Vafaei (9-46)

Here we go again! Jack knocks in a red that over right corner but stuck to the knuckle, there's a path through to the black, and down it goes. BUT WHAT?! Jack not only plays a poor positional shot, he then leaves a black fractionally short of left corner, and this is Hossein's chance to reduce his arrears!

Lisowski 3-0 Vafaei

Jack hands Hossein a chance to pot a few balls, but he misses an easy one, a red to left corner, then concedes.

Lisowski 2-0 Vafaei (67-1)

And here it is. Hossein plays a terrible shot, attempting a cross-double I think, then a red-black from Jack means he needs two snookers; I think he's only earnt six points all night.

Lisowski 2-0 Vafaei (59-1)

Jack slides by a red he's hoping to pot so he calmly plays safe; but not that safe! Hossein hammers home a starter to right corner, but winds up on nowt - that's the way it's going for him tonight. Then Jack leaves him at the top end, safe in the knowledge that there's nothing on, then splatters a sensational long red into the green pocket! That's his best shot yet! Hossein must be spewing, and when he's snookered behind the brown, close to the side cushion, he fouls before hitting second time. Jack needs one more red-colour for 3-0.

Lisowski 2-0 Vafaei (47-0)

Oh dear. Another error from Hossein hands Jack a simple starter to roll into left corner. He looks so smooth and so composed; when a kick afflicts him, he spanks a cut-back black, zooms in and out of baulk, and back into perfect position.

On table two

Joe Perry 1-1 Stuart Bingham

Lisowski 2-0 Vafaei (16-0)

Immediately, Jack gets in again, but when he opens the pack off the black and finishes on nowt, he has to hide the white down the table. In co-comms, Dom notes that he prefers to break the cluster off the blue, for that reason - off the black, you've fewer possibilities.

Lisowski 2-0 Vafaei

On 95, Jack tries for a red to right corner but it doesn't pass the pink so no ton for him. But he'll take a 2-0 lead, and already I'm not sure what Hossein can do about this. Let's see!

Lisowski 1-0 Vafaei (62-5)

Jack is very, very comfy out there. I actually wondered if this would happen: in an open game, you go with the better potter, and good though Hossein is, he's not close to Jack in that department.

Lisowski 1-0 Vafaei (37-5)

Hossein plays an OK safety, but he leaves Jack a shot to nowt, and have a look! Dead slow, he cues dead straight to guide a beautiful starter right in the heart of the pocket. And have a look, when he underhits one that only just drops, he plays a terrific black that also opens the pack a bit, then he sends a red long to the yellow pocket. This is great stuff.

Lisowski 1-0 Vafaei

Jack's break brings a red towards the middle-left bag and Hossein drains it, but he can't get from brown to red.

On table two

Joe Perry 1-0 Stuart Bingham
Joe's in some rare form.

Lisowski 1-0 Vafaei

Lovely work from Jack, who keeps Hossein from potting a ball, knocking colours safe as he accumulates lest he run out of position or miss.

Lisowski 0-0 Vafaei (51-0)

Absolutely vintage Jack. Hossein takes on a tricky one and narrowly misses, then Jack weighs up a safety before knucking one from centre to right corner. The ay the balls are, you expect him to secure the frame at this visit.

Lisowski 0-0 Vafaei (39-0)

Two single reds to Jack, the second of which allows him a snooker behind the brown; Hossein escapes via roll-up.

Lisowski 0-0 Vafaei (39-0)

In Jack's favour! He runs out of position and doesn't nail his safety. That tempts Hossein into attempting a pot to left corner, he misses, and Jack's back in. Again, though, a poor shot means he has to play safe, so he doesn't force it and goes back towards baulk.

Lisowski 0-0 Vafaei (24-0)

Error from Hossein, a nicely cuttable red to left corner and Jack gets to work, a nice little cannon freeing various reds. Already, this looks like a really good chance. But we know how this game go.

Off we go!

Boyz n' the baize

Jack speaks

On his six final defeats, he notes that most of the randoms who've won titles got lucky by meeting another surprise package who'd reached the end, whereas he's had to face top players. I'd have to check that, but Fan, at least, beat Ronnie. Anyhow, Jack tells us he's always trying to evolve his game and working with Peter Ebdon has taught him to be more patient. In the studio, Neal notes that he couldn't think of two more different players, and that Peter, a world champion, didn't have Jack's talent but compensated with competitive instinct. It's also fair to note that standards are higher now and Ebdon sneaked in when Hendry was coming to the end and Ronnie wasn't quite there.

Hossein, meanwhile

Is trying to force his way into the Masters - he needs a deep run here. But more than that, he's trying to make his people - the people of Iran - happy.

I've had enough of hearing it

So you can be damn sure Jack Lisowski has had enough of hearing it: he's the best player never to win a ranking tournament. It's crazy, really, when you think about the players that have - Robert Milkins, Fan Zhengyi, Michael Holt, Matt Selt, Jordan Brown, Jimmy Robertson - and so on. Is this his time?

Evening all!

Decent little afternoon's jaunt, eh? Well let's hope for more of the same tonight. We'll be focusing on Hossein Vafaei v Jack Lisowski, and updating on Joe Perry v Stuart Bingham. I can't actually split them, as it goes - I'm glad it wasn't me deciding which one to put on the main channel - because both should be open, fun battles.

Thanks for joining us

We will return for more live updates at 7pm with 'Jackpot' Jack Lisowski and Hossein Vafaei doing battle. Should be quite the night in York.

Trump 5-6 Murphy

"This isn't a shock to me. I know how good Shaun is. We've had some great battles down through the years," said Trump. "He played the best in the final three frames and that is why he won. He deserved to win."

Trump 5-5 Murphy (5-97)

A 53 break from Murphy in the concluding frame and he wins 6-5. Judd restricted to only five points in final three frames. Murphy through to a quarter-final against Jack Lisowski or Hossein Vafaei. A merited win.

Trump 5-5 Murphy (5-74)

And Murphy is going to complete the comeback from 5-3 behind. A brilliant recovery and Murphy is going to reach the last eight.

Trump 5-5 Murphy (5-59)

Murphy goes for a long red. Misses and Trump tucks in red to a centre pocket. Just snooker behind green. Murphy short of pace leaves Trump with a rest shot down the rail, but the red stays out. What a chance for Murphy to clinch frame and match.

Trump 5-5 Murphy (0-44)

A decent run of 44, but no match-winning contribution as pack doesn't open nicely. Just the safety shot with Trump opening up more reds whenever he can.

Trump 5-5 Murphy (0-36)

Black is in the clear. Will need to open up these reds, but looks very promising as break races to 36. What a period of potting from Murphy this has been.

Trump 5-5 Murphy (0-12)

Murphy cracks home another fabulous long red at outset of the final frame. And in goes green. First chance to Shaun in the decider. Judd will be fearing the worst here.

Trump 5-4 Murphy (0-104)

A third century of the match. 104. Out of position with two reds left up. Almost flukes the reds, but not quite. Three centuries in five frames won by Murphy. 5-5 heading for the final frame. Magnificent snooker.

Trump 5-4 Murphy (0-88)

Can he take us to the deciding frame with a 147 break? What an effort this has been.

Trump 5-4 Murphy (0-80)

All reds and blacks so far from Murphy...frame is under lock and key. We are heading 5-5 in York.

Trump 5-4 Murphy (0-49)

Looks like we might be heading all the way in this last-16 joust. Doesn't look too many obstacles in the path of a frame-winning break for Murph.

Trump 5-4 Murphy (0-24)

Well, this is getting interesting. Trump can't can red from distance and has stuck up a red for Murphy early in the 10th frame. In it goes from mid-range. And with the 2005 world champion in stroke, this is a decent chance it must be said.

Trump 5-3 Murphy (0-110)

Murphy declares on 110 and he trails 5-4 in the race to six frames. Superb response. Trump needs one, Murphy two. All on the line at the Barbican.

Trump 5-3 Murphy (0-90)

Every chance of a century for Murphy, his second of the match..

Trump 5-3 Murphy (0-73)

Very impressive from Murphy so far. Has not really been out of position as he bids to extend this match to another frame. Just what he was looking for.

Trump 5-3 Murphy (0-30)

Attacking safety by Trump sees Murphy drill a red into the pocket from distance before springboarding back up table for blue. What a shot that is. Decent opportunity to compile a heavy knock here.

Trump 4-3 Murphy (67-35)

A 34-minute frame is finally over. Trump with a brave pot on blue off the black and in goes double on pink. Trump chasing one more frame to reach the last eight. This match has been a taut affair.

Trump 4-3 Murphy (56-31)

Murphy gives away six points as Trump's lead moves to 16 points on final red. Another safety blunder by Murphy could cost him the frame. Sits down and is facing losing this frame. Trump 25 clear with 22 left up. Almost knocks the black in trying to slot brown. That was almost a huge error, but looks a strong favourite to move 5-3 clear.

Trump 4-3 Murphy (41-31)

Both men making breaks for fun early on, but this has been a struggle since the interval. Balls running awkwardly has forced the reliance on tactical moves. Trump teases home penultimate red from distance. Fascinating moments.

Trump 4-3 Murphy (40-9)

Murphy missing with the rest provides Trump with chance to embark upon a bout of scoring. Would dearly love to take this frame out with minimum fuss after that elongated seventh frame. But just when he seemed all set, Trump misses a blue off the spot. Didn't see that coming.

Trump 4-2 Murphy (33-53)

Epic frame comes down to final four colours. 47 minutes this one has been going. Safety duel in progress. Murphy needing brown and blue, Trump the lot. And Murphy cans the brown with a thumping long pot on brown. What a wonderful pot. Drops in blue and that should be that. Trump concedes. A 4-3 lead for Trump.

Trump 4-2 Murphy (33-44)

Trump's tactical game keeping the pressure on. Murphy in a snooker, misses the yellow and hits the pink for the concession of six foul points. Gets there second time, but leaves the yellow for Judd to go at. Lovely long yellow from Judd before he drops in green and leaves Murphy snookered on brown. What another battling frame from Trump.

Trump 4-2 Murphy (22-44)

Down to a safety duel on final red before Murphy leaves red to a middle bag. In goes the final red and difference is 22 points on colours.

Trump 4-2 Murphy (7-44)

Murphy tucked up tight behind the yellow, but plays a brilliant escape off two cushions to hit the reds. Three reds left up with Murphy clinging to lead of 37 points.

Trump 4-2 Murphy (2-32)

Murphy toiling to make a break with balls in tricky positions. Opts for a safety off brown. Trump not punished for missing green as he attempted roll up behind it. Trump then attempts to thump in a red, but well off potting angle and this is chance for Murphy to close to 4-3 behind. Scrappy old frame this one.

Clarke 1-6 Ding

Ding Junhui to face world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan in the quarter-finals on Friday afternoon. Breaks of 99, 87, 118, 55 and two 67s complete a solid afternoon's work for the three-time UK winner against Jamie Clarke.

Trump 4-2 Murphy (1-11)

Trump has unearthed some fine safety play this afternoon to keep Murphy in check. Can't do much if you don't get chances is certainly the vibe as Murphy picks out plant on reds from distance.

Trump 4-2 Murphy (1-10)

Murphy leaving Trump tight behind the blue a few times in baulk, but can't benefit as a cut on a red sticks in jaws. All a bit frustrating for Murphy at moment.

Trump 3-2 Murphy (116-0)

A break of 62 to go with 59, 61 and 89 from Trump. Murphy looks slightly forlorn with Trump taking a quick comfort break

Trump 3-2 Murphy (74-0)

Trump disappointment in failing to land on blue properly is atoned for by a brilliant safety shot. Murphy snookered behind yellow. Escapes from snooker, but has left red and this should be a third straight frame for Judd. Tough matchplay snooker by the 2019 world champion.

Trump 3-2 Murphy (54-0)

Murphy has gone over 30 minutes without potting a ball at the Barbican. Tough old school at this level. Trump has no such issues as he drills home a super red from distance.

Trump 3-2 Murphy (48-0)

Murphy in a bit of a pickle here as he misses three times for the concession of 13 points attempting to escape from a snooker. Trump can't slot a red to a yellow bag. Murphy feeling heat out there at the moment.

Trump 3-2 Murphy (35-0)

Trump halfway to the winning post at a tournament he won back in 2011. A safety error by Shaun provides Trump with first chance to score in the sixth frame. But he misses a mid-range red on 35. A bit of a light visit with only 30-plus points in the locker.

Trump 2-2 Murphy (71-47)

Wallops in green, brown and blue to seal the frame in impressive style. A 3-2 lead for Trump as he recovered strongly aided by a timely safety shot. Murphy will rue breaking down among the balls. Trump ahead for the first time in this match.

Trump 2-2 Murphy (59-47)

Judd inches ahead on the final red. In goes the object ball and on goes Trump. Green is the key to this frame as break reaches 57 on the colours. Pops in the yellow before finishing with a solid safety shot on green. Murphy makes the blunder on green and he has left chance for Trump.

Trump 2-2 Murphy (28-47)

A terrific long ranger from Judd and suddenly the story of this frame could be about to take another diversion. Green is safe near a side cushion, but is anything safe when Trump is in the mood?

Trump 2-2 Murphy (0-47)

Murphy looking poised for another biggie here after splattering those reds apart with some relish. Just needs to be mindful of his work, but has slightly run out of position on a pink. And he opts to refuse the pot on pink to get white into baulk. Will be disappointed with the ending, but a solid enough safety shot.

Clarke 0-4 Ding

Make that 4-0 to Ding after a 118 break in the fourth frame to go with his earlier 99 and 87. Some fine scoring power from the 2011 Masters winner.

Trump 2-2 Murphy (0-16)

A best-of-11 frame match has been reduced to a best of seven. Brilliant cutback on a black from Murphy to gain access to the table after a safety error by Trump. What can Shaun put together at this visit?

Clarke 0-3 Ding

The three-time UK champion on course for a meeting with Ronnie O'Sullivan in the last eight. Breaks of 99 and 87 from the Chinese player. Halfway to the quarter-finals.

Trump 1-2 Murphy (84-0)

Murph tries to bludgeon home a long red from distance. Doesn't drop and he has left red over a middle pocket. Should be the frame for Trump after a few minutes of uncertainty. Nothing to split the two former UK and world champions at the break. York crowd lapping up the skill on show.

Trump 1-2 Murphy (56-0)

Not quite a done deal as Trump runs out of position. Tries to cut in a red to a centre pocket, but nothing doing. Murphy then rattles jaws with a red rattling the jaws via rest shot.

Trump 1-2 Murphy (50-0)

Trump topping up his lead, but plenty of scope for Murphy to mount a recovery in this frame. Judd then drops in another long red with a fine cut and is back out for green. Looks for all the world like we are heading 2-2.

Trump 1-2 Murphy (36-0)

Another delightful long red by Judd at outset of the fourth frame. Picks off a few more cherries before moving up for blue. Loses cue ball off the split. Just the safety coming up after a decent cameo.

Trump 1-1 Murphy (66-73)

And Murphy with an immaculate clearance of 43 right on cue. He leads 2-1. Both men with chances, but Trump's 61 not enough to get the job done. A big steal. One more frame before the mid-session interval.

Trump 1-1 Murphy (66-39)

Well, that is unexpected. 61 from Trump before he hangs his head in despair. Just the snooker to play, but wanted to win frame at that visit. Just could not find the desired position. Murphy escapes from snooker. Leaves the red, but Trump misses yellow after slotting mid-range red. Murphy then with chance to launch the counter attack.

Trump 1-1 Murphy (34-30)

Plenty of reds here in open positions for Judd to punish the earlier Murphy miss. Doesn't need to trouble himself with any difficult cannons. Plenty of points in open to put this third frame to bed.

Trump 1-1 Murphy (8-30)

Quickly up to 30 before a mid-range red eludes him as he tried to hold for black. He'll be disappointed with that outcome. Solid safety from Trump and Murphy misses thin snick off red from distance to leave a free ball for Trump. In goes the yellow and on goes the Juddernaut.

Trump 1-1 Murphy (0-17)

Trading blows at the moment as Murph drops in a crunching long red. That fairly rasped the leather of the pockets when it disappeared. Barbican crowd loving every moment of this duel so far.

Trump 0-1 Murphy (89-0)

Murphy played the break-off shot, left Trump a long red shot and has not returned to the table. High quality stuff. A lovely run of 89 from Judd and we are level at 1-1.

Trump 0-1 Murphy (75-0)

Some fabulous pots by Trump in this break. Off two cushions via thumping pot on blue to develop reds. And this could be a one-visit kill to restore parity at 1-1. Neither of these men hanging about. The Ace In The Pack against The Magician is certainly producing plenty of theatre here.

Trump 0-1 Murphy (26-0)

Trump carts a magical long red into a top bag from distance. What a fabulous effort that is. And he has chance to make good on his early promise in this frame.

Trump 0-0 Murphy (18-105)

A blistering break of 100 from the world No. 13 and he is off to an ideal start in this last-16 match against Trump. He leads 1-0 in the race to six. Game on.

Trump 0-0 Murphy (18-80)

Murphy is certainly restricted in movement, but not in scoring. This has been a fabulous break to win the opening frame of the day.

Trump 0-0 Murphy (18-46)

This is a very decent opportunity for The Magician. Won't be feeling aches and pains of neck and back so much if he can compile a big break here.

Trump 0-0 Murphy (18-5)

Well, can always happen. Trump tries to develop reds off blue. In goes blue, but he plants a red into the top pocket. That halts the break in its tracks. Murphy handed an unforeseen reprieve.

Trump 0-0 Murphy (9-0)

Early fluke on a red for Trump enables him to roll up behind the yellow in setting a snooker. Murphy in a spot of bother here. Escapes from snooker via two cushions, but leaves his opponent an easy opening red to get hand on table.

Trump 0-0 Murphy (0-0)

So what is the narrative between these two blokes on the old green baize? 2019 world champion Trump is 11-10 clear of 2005 Crucible winner Murphy since they first met in the last 32 of the 2007 World Championship. Murphy won that one 10-7, but Trump emerged a 6-2 victor the last time they met in the Turkish Masters semi-finals earlier this year.

Murphy not feeling fit

The 2005 world champion has taken to Twitter this morning admitting he has neck and shoulder problems after his thrilling 6-5 win over David Gilbert on Tuesday in the last 32.
"In terrible pain today with my neck/shoulder," he said. "Started getting worse two days ago and I could hardly play at all yesterday. Going to try everything to be ready to play at 1pm, but right now it’s not looking good."
Hopefully he never suffered injury via his trademark fist pump.
