Wu Yu Lin delighted the home fans at the World Games in Kaohsiung by stunning Ricky Walden 3-1 in the opening round.
Walden went into the event as the highest ranked player in the draw but dropped three frames in a row against the Chinese Taipei underdog after having won the opener.
Wu will next play Mohammed Shehab. The UAE player caused an upset of his own by beating European U19 champion Stephen Craigie 3-2.
Former world championship finalist Nigel Bond avoided a similar fate as he cruised to a 3-0 win over Dene O'Kane of New Zealand and he will next meet Thai professional Thepchaiya Un Nooh in the last eight.
Thepchaiya advanced with a 3-1 win over Paul Davies.
On Wednesday, England's Mike Dunn suffered a shock 3-2 defeat to Egypt's Mohammed Awad on the opening day of the tournament.
World number 38 Dunn was the fourth highest ranked player in the tournament but defeat for the professional saw Awad book a place in the quarter-finals, where he will face Iran's Soheil Vehedi.
Vehedi won through to the last eight with a 3-1 victory over Australia's Glen Wilkinson.
Home fans were given cheer as Shu Hung Lin enjoyed a 3-0 victory over South Africa's Francois Ellis. Shu will next face former English Amateur champion David Grace after the Londoner edged Thai professional Atthasit Mahitthi 3-2.
