The Nugget's last major final was at the 2004 Welsh Open, when he eventually lost to Ronnie O'Sullivan 9-8.
And so far he looks to be in formidable form, which must surely now make him one of the favourites. However he must first dismiss Graham Dott.
Elsewhere Michael Judge made a great scalp, beating seeded player Barry Hawkins.
The man from Dublin - who currently stands 34 in the world - beat arguably the most improved player on the circuit over the last two years, who has since risen to 17.
Judge set up a last 16 clash against qualifier Andrew Higginson, after a quick seventh frame which saw him win the match 5-2.
Mark Williams MBE was the sixth seed to fall after losing 5-4 in a match that ended just under the three-hour mark.
The Welsh potting machine was down 2-1 to the Scotsman - who sits just outside the top 50 - before regaining some form.
The sixth frame was the possible turning point, when Williams missed the black and the chance of a 4-2 lead.
However, he ensured the match would go the distance and in the final frame both men had the opportunity to take it.
Nerves were tested and even though the pair made equally crucial mistakes, it was the underdog Burnett who prevailed.
Burnett will need to cut out the errors he displayed tonight, if he is to overcome Shaun Murphy.
