Veteran Steve Davis says his aim was to remain in the world's top 16 beyond his 50th birthday. The 49-year-old scored a 5-3 victory over current world champion Graeme Dott to reach the last eight of the Welsh Open, his ranking tournament quarter-final of
"It would be great to stay there when I turn 50, especially as I won't have to go back to the qualifiers at Prestatyn," said Davis.
"I started my career at Pontin's but I don't want to end it there - I haven't got enough 50p's for the meter!
"To beat the world champion and someone whose put me to bed a few times in recent years is great."
Davis, who captured the last two of his 28 world ranking titles at the Welsh Open in 1994 and 1995, was in fluent form against Dott with breaks of 82, 69 and 76.
And the six-time world champion says the conditions in Newport were helping him.
"I'm hitting the ball quite straight at the moment and when you're confident about your potting you can devote a greater percentage of your concentration to positional play.
"The cloth is very fast so you have to be precise."
