Alan McManus is hoping that his winning start to the Welsh Open will further boost his chance of retaining his top 32 ranking. The 26-year-old started the season a lowly 51st in the provisional list after a poor 2005/06 campaign which saw him drop out of
But the two-times Welsh Open finalist moved in to the second round with a 5-2 defeat of Rod Lawler in Newport on Monday to continue a much-improved season.
McManus won just one match at a ranking event in the whole of last season, but has already reached the semi-finals of the Grand Prix and the last 16 of the UK Championship this time around.
"I'm touch and go for the top 32 and that's my main target for the rest of the season," said the Glasgow-based player.
"I've got my qualifier for the Crucible next month and there will be a lot of pressure on that. I'm looking forward to working really hard towards it.
"But if I can have a good run here I can put myself in a good position."
McManus will face friend and practice partner Stephen Maguire in the second round in Newport.
"It should be a good game against Stephen," he added. "He's one of the guys who could win any tournament."
