Hawkins has a level of consistency at The Crucible which few can match and he will now face the winner of the match between Antony McGill and Ding Junhui as he bids for a semi-final place for the fourth time in five years.
Hawkins resumed on Saturday morning with a 9-7 lead but that was quickly eradicated when back-to-back breaks of 91 and 100 saw Lyu draw level.

The Hawk steadied himself with a score of 65-29 in the 19th frame to go 10-9 up, and looked set to add another with a break of 55 in the next frame. But in a tense finale, Lyu trapped him behind the black with only the pink to play and forced a foul, going on to take the frame.

But the world number six’s class shone through as he accelerated away with breaks of 54, 132 and 76 giving him the next three frames and the win.

Friday report

Hawkins - seeded 12th at this year's event - moved from 5-3 to 8-3 ahead with breaks of 124, 83 and 61.
There was danger the match could been more or less finished in the second session with six more frames to be played, but 20-year-old Lyu suddenly began to flow as imperious runs of 125, 72, 79 and 60 saw him close to only behind at 8-7.
The 16th and final frame of the session was predictably tension-packed, but Hawkins called on all his matchplay skills to edge it for a 9-7 lead.
