Murphy will be happier to come out of the session level however, as he trailed 10-8 and 11-9 while he also took the final frame of the session to go in level.
Selby took a tight first frame of the session after 55 minutes of play despite producing five snookers before finally negotiating one particularly difficult shot, but the next frame was more clear cut as a superb 111 break put him 10-8 up.
Murphy comfortably took the next frame, before Selby edged an error ridden frame to restore his two frame advantage.
Murphy finally started to find his potting ability after the interval however, as breaks of 76 and 66 restored parity in the contest.
He gave Selby an opening in the next frame though, and the qualifier punished him with a magnificent clearance of 129 for what was Selby's ninth century of the tournament.
The final frame was another tight affair with very few break building opportunities for either player, but an important break of 31 from Murphy which brought the game to the colours proved key, and it is still all to play for going into this evening's final session.
