Murphy utterly swamped debutant Luo Honghao with his Chinese opponent only contributing 89 points in the match, an outcome that leaves the world number 92 qualifier sent packing with a crushing defeat.
Murphy compiled four century breaks in dominating the opening session on Sunday running in knocks of 138, 102, 101, 76, 62 and 123 against the 19-year-old onlooker in an Easter Sunday exhibition. Luo had two decent chances in the 10th frame, but could only another 11 points to his overnight tally of 78 before his opponent put him out his misery with another rapid winning break of 59.
Murphy will face 2010 winner Neil Robertson in the last 16 after his 10-1 win over Michael Georgiou.
Danny Fowler managed only 191 points in his 10-1 defeat to seven-times world champion Stephen Hendry in 1993, but the Worksop player no longer holds the record.
'Steady' Eddie Charlton lost 10-0 to John Parrott in 1992, and was the only player to suffer a whitewash at the venue until the unfortunate Luo's hellish debut at the fabled venue.
Mark Selby battled into the second round of the World Championship after beating Zhao Xintong 10-7 on Monday night.
The three-time world champion had trailed 3-0 and 5-1 against China’s Xintong, but fought back in style as two breaks of 131 helped him level up at 5-5.
Xintong continued to take the match to Selby, with the pair locked at 7-7, but it was the latter who held his nerve by winning the next three frames.
Awaiting Selby in the second round is Gary Wilson, who edged out Luca Brecel 10-9.
Meanwhile, Monday’s other evening session saw David Gilbert take a 6-3 advantage over fellow Englishman Joe Perry.
Gilbert raced into a 4-0 lead over Perry, and will look to close out the victory in the afternoon session on Tuesday.
