Medal hope Katie Ormerod out of Olympics with heel fracture

Ormerod, who suffered a wrist fracture in training on Wednesday, will undergo immediate surgery following another training accident.

In a statement, Team GB said the medal hope had suffered a "severe fracture to her right heel bone."

"We are deeply sorry for Katie and her fellow snowboarders who have lost a valued member of their close-knit team. She is a world class competitor across both disciplines and we are desperately disappointed for her. From everyone at Team GB we wish her all the best for her recovery,” Mike Hay, Team GB Chef de Mission said.

The 20-year-old had been tipped to match or better the performance of Jenny Jones, whose bronze in snowboard slopestyle in Sochi four years ago was the nation's first medal on snow.

Dan Hunt, British Ski and Snowboard's performance director, added: "Her determined and fearless nature will see her come back from this and reach the exciting potential and future that is ahead of her.

"Her team-mates will now be giving their all for her as well as their nation."

This is the latest in a long line of injuries that Ormerod has suffered. In the past she has snapped her anterior cruciate knee ligament, damaged the meniscus in both her knees and fractured her shoulder, both arms and back.

She won slopestyle World Cup gold in Moscow in 2017 and won bronze at the X Games in the same year, the year before she finished third at the Big Air World Cup in PyeongChang.
