Forty years after Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists in a civil rights gesture on the Olympic medal stand in Mexico City, protests on the podium could make a comeback in Beijing.
China's support of the Sudan government and its role in the conflict aroused protests during several international stops on the Olympic torch relay and has drawn objections from several athletes.
US softball outfielder Jessica Mendoza is among those who has pondered some form of protest should the three-time Olympic champion Americans reach the podium at Beijing.
"I thought about that. First we have to win the gold to get that 15 minutes. If we get that, we'll have to see," Mendoza said.
"It's not my place to tell China what to do. It's my place to let people know what's happening. They will hold people accountable for what they do."
