Denis Yuskov caps a fine first day for Russia at Europeans

Russian speed skater Denis Yuskov sent the home crowd in Kolomna wild with victory in the 1500-metre event on the first day of the European Speed Skating Championships.
He grabbed gold with a time of 1:44.53, finishing over half a second up on Holland's Thomas Krol while Koen Verweij claimed third.
In the women's 1500m event it was the Netherlands who topped the pile, Lotte van Beek winning in a time of 1:55.52.
Yekaterina Shikhova finished second with a time of 1:56.57 while Marrit Leenstra was third.
Ronald Mulder of the Netherlands won the men's event earlier in the day over the shorter distance of 500m.
Mulder, who won Olympic bronze at the distance in Sochi, was just in front of Mika Poutala of Finland and world record holder Pavel Kulizhnikov of Russia.
In the women's race Austria's Vanessa Herzog won in 37.69 seconds. Angelina Golikova of Russia was second with 38.04 and the Czech Republic’s Karolina Erbanova, last year’s overall champion, was third in 38.18.
