Sablikova and Bergsma take world championship gold
Martina Sablikova dethroned reigning champion Ireen Wust to take women's 3000m gold on the opening day of the speedskating single distance world championships in Heerenveen.
Sablikova upset the home crowd by crossing the line in 4:02.17 - 1.29 seconds ahead of Wust.
It would have been an all Dutch podium if not for the Czech champion with Wust taking silver, Marije Joling winning bronze and Jorien Voorhuis narrowly missing out on a podium spot.
"I've won a lot in my career so only titles count. I've lost the gold," Wust said. "I started too fast."
In the men's 10,000 metre race Jorrit Bergsma retained his crown in dominant fashion after clocking 12:54.82 to take gold.
Bergsma's teammate Erik Jan Kooiman took silver but was 7.75 seconds back while bronze went to Germany's Patrick Beckert.
