The world champion's time of 1:34.102 on his Ducati beat the official track record handsomely, with the 37-year-old Australian using qualifying tyres.
Second fastest overall was rapid local Ruben Xaus on a year-old machine run by the Sterilgada team - half a second slower. A dominant test day for Ducati was completed by the second works bike of Lorenzo Lanzi going third.
Italian Max Biaggi put in the quickest lap of all the four-cylinder bikes present, despite the changeable but generally strong winds.
Troy Corser was fifth fastest, followed closely by his Yamaha Motor Italia team-mate Noriyuki Haga, who fell twice during the day, but without sustaining any major damage.
Fonsi Nieto was the best of the PSG-1 Kawasakis in seventh, although he and his tenth-place team-mate Regis Laconi both struggled in the high winds at the Spanish circuit.
Karl Muggeridge and Max Neukirchner on their Alto Evolution Honda and Suzuki Germany machines split the two green meanies.
Britain's Dean Ellison was 18th and slowest on the final day on his Pedercini Ducati, while championship leader James Toseland's Ten Kate Honda team skipped the test.
