Klochkova became the first woman to win the same two swimming events at successive games on Tuesday when she added the 200 metres individual medley gold to the gold she had already won in the 400 medley.
"On the suggestion from the head of Ukraine's national Olympic Committee Viktor Yanukovich, President Leonid Kuchma has signed a decree to award the 'hero of Ukraine' title to Yana Klochkova for her distinguished service to Ukraine and for improving the nation's standing at the 2004 Olympic Games," the statement said.
Klochkova's triumph happened too late for the Wednesday papers, but her double victory is sure to propel her into the same league as Ukraine's other sporting heroes such as soccer striker Andriy Shevchenko and the boxing Klitschko brothers.
Shevchenko and the Klitschko brothers, Vitali and Vladimir, advertise everything from beer to razors in Ukraine.
