Swimming-Monahan completes Lake Geneva swim as part of record bid

EVIANS-LES-BAINS, France, Aug 26 (Reuters) - American swimmer Jaimie Monahan, pictured here, swam across Lake Geneva on Sunday as part of her bid to set a Guinness World Record for the fastest person to complete six marathon swims on as many continents.

The swim from Lausanne on the Swiss side of the lake to Evians-les-Bains on the French side was the fifth out of the six stages, leaving her only with the New York leg -- from Manhattan to Coney Island -- to complete. That had been scheduled to be the first stage but was postponed because of bad weather.
Monahan, 38, has logged over 75 major swimming events in 10 years as an open water, ice and winter swimmer and was inducted this year into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.
The other stages were in Colombia (Tierra Bomba Island), Australia (Bondi Beach to Watsons Bay), the Malacca and Singapore Straits, and Egypt (Gulf of Aquaba and Red Sea), which she completed despite suffering a jellyfish sting.
She would become the first person to hold the title in the category, which is one of the 47,000 records recognised by Guinness. According to Guinness, the swims can vary in length but must be at least 10 kilometres long.
