Adam Peaty smashed his own 50m breaststroke world record for the second time in a day to reach the final of the world championships in Budapest.
The British Olympic Champion had set his stall out with a remarkable swim in the morning heat, breaking his own world record with a swim of 26.10 seconds.
But Peaty went one better in Tuesday afternoon’s semi-final in Budapest, blowing the field away with a barnstorming swim of 25.95s.
Peaty had been genuinely surprised by breaking the world record he set in Kazan in 2015 during Tuesday morning's heats, saying:
Honestly, I wasn't going out there this morning for a world record. It's 10 o'clock and I'm very happy with that swim. That world record is two years old, so it's due another push on.
And despite pushing harder in the semi-final, Peaty again looked taken aback by his time. In one day Peaty has lowered the fastest time ever seen by over half a second. He is quicker than the next-best man of all time by an astonishing 0.59 seconds.
The 22-year-old is gunning for a golden double at the World Championships, having already won the 100m title with a Championship-Record time on Monday.
