GAME, SET AND MATCH! – ALCARAZ 6-3 6-1 ZVEREV
It’s another break – and Carlos Alcaraz is the Madrid Open champion. He backs up his wins over Nadal and Djokovic to destroy Zverev in as one-sided a final as you’ll see.
Zverev hits back from 0-40 to save three match points but a double fault offers up a fourth before ANOTHER double fault gives the 19-year-old the title.

The fat lady is warming somewhere nearby to start singing the name of Carlos Alcaraz. He backs up the double break with a strong hold and is one game from lifting his second Masters 1000 title.

Its’ an absolute horror show from Sascha. The defending champion coughs up two double faults and lands a couple of easy volleys into the net. It offers up a break chance for Alcaraz who seals it with a sublime lob.
ALCARAZ 6-3 3-1 ZVEREV
Too good. Even when he’s not red-lining Alcaraz is just too in-tune today. Zverev looks a yard off the pace and seems completely lost out there. Carlos consolidates with a game to 30 and is making short work of what many were hoping would be a great tussle to watch.

BREAK! – ALCARAZ 6-3 2-1 ZVEREV
What are we witnessing? It’s just world class tennis. Zverev simply doesn’t know what to do. He changes his racquet at 0-40 but it makes no difference. He’s being outclassed. A sensational drop shot rubber-stamps the break to love and Carlos is on the march to another title.

Sascha strikes the first blow to try and rattle the youngster and subdue the crowd, but Carlos is having none of it. He surges through four points in a row to get on the board with relative ease. Zverev has barely made any inroads on the Spaniard’s serve as of yet.

It’s a nervy start and Zverev appears to be on the rope when stop a point mid-rally to challenge a shot. It is indeed out and proves crucial as he hits back from a worrying opening couple of points and 0-30 to dig out an important hold as he tries to find a way back into this.

Did you ever doubt him? The 19-year-old pumps his fist as he sends the crowd into raptures by serving out a dominant set to love in just 31 minutes.

Blink and you’d have missed that. Zverev poses the serve-out question with a rapid love hold.

More fearless tennis from a player who doesn’t seem to have any flaws in his game. He consolidates with a game to 15 and Zverev takes his chair wondering what he can do to weather such a continual storm.

That is a wonderful return game and Zverev simply has no answer as he is broken to love. Alcaraz sinks his teeth into the challenge with a fabulous drop-shot-crosscourt pass combo. He follows it up by snaring triple break point with a bullet of a forehand before a dipping, low backhand catches out his opponent at the net.
ALCARAZ 3-2 ZVEREV
Another love hold for Carlos. He concludes it with a deft serve and volley to leave Sascha stranded way beyond the baseline. It could be a very useful ploy as this match develops.
ALCARAZ 2-2 ZVEREV
A trio of unforced forehand errors gift Alcaraz the first break point of the match. Zverev finds a big serve to help save it before an ace down the T and another crisp winner ease him through to the hold.
ALCARAZ 2-1 ZVEREV
No danger for Carlos. He motors through a supreme love hold and those early butterflies have evidently disappeared.
ALCARAZ 1-1 ZVEREV
The two-time champion responds with an emphatic hold to 15. A deep, probing forehand is the pick off his shots while Alcaraz’s sublime pass on the run can’t inspire some early pressure.
ALCARAZ 1-0 ZVEREV
There are a few nerves on show as the teenager follows up a horror shank on the first point with a wildly miscued forehand on the third. He gathers his composure in good time though and reels off the next three points to open with a hold to 30.
