Mario Ancic defended his title in S'Hertogenbosch on Saturday with a shaky 6-0 5-7 7-5 win over Jan Hernych. The Croatian blasted his Czech opponent away in the early stages of the match but had to fight off a determined comeback before taking a tense vic
Ancic's performance at the Wimbledon warm-up tournament put him back in the top 10 of the ATP rankings.
It looked to be plain sailing for Ancic, 22, after he took the first set 6-0 in just 22 minutes but Hernych got a better grip on the towering Croat's 200kph serve in the second set.
Ancic handed Hernych the set with a double fault.
He continued to struggle to hold serve in the third set, saving four break points but took his only chance at breaking the 26-year-old Czech player's serve, at 6-5 in the final set, to win the match.
At Wimbledon next week, Ancic is seeded seventh and will meet Spain's Nicolas Almagro in the first round.
