Tennis news - Novak Djokovic opens ATP World Tour Finals campaign by trouncing Isner
Updated 12/11/2018 at 22:02 GMT
Five-time ATP Finals champion Novak Djokovic began his quest for a record-equalling title by handing out a comprehensive beating to John Isner, 6-4, 6-3.
"The match was great, obviously," the world number one said on court afterwards. "I had three breaks of serve of John which is sometimes 'mission impossible' but I managed to be at the right place at the right time. I held serve well, I backed it up from the baseline, I played very solid and didn't give him many opportunities."
Indeed, the Serbian was almost perfect in the first set, and returned Isner's famous serve with ease.
The American started the second set in more positive style, holding to love - something he did not manage at all in the opener - and overall he hit 13 aces and got 69 per cent of his first serves in.
But Djokovic was even stronger, winning 19 service points in a row before that run was brought to an end in the penultimate game of the match.
Djokovic plays again on Wednesday, in the afternoon session, when he takes on Alexander Zverev. Isner plays in the evening session, facing Marin Cilic.
