Djokovic is up next to huge cheers. He jokes that Medvedev doesn't call him to practise any more! He hails him as a great guy and says it's only a matter of time until Daniil is holding a major trophy - but can he wait a few more years!
Medvedev is giving his runner-up speech. He is a charming character when he has the mic. He tells Nole that nine Australian Open titles is quite something but that it probably isn't his last either. He provides a nice anecdote about how kind Djoker was when they practiced in Monaco when he was 500-600th in the world. He thanks his own team and says he hopes he will be holding a Grand Slam trophy soon.
MATCH REPORT: Djokovic clinched an astonishing ninth Australian Open title as he brushed aside Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to win 7-5 6-2 6-2 at Melbourne Park, writes Dan Quarrell. Read on below...
THE BIG THREE REIGN SUPREME AT THEIR FAVOURED MAJORS: Nadal is the only man to have won more Grand Slam titles at the same place, lifting 13 trophies at the French Open. Djokovic’s ninth in Australia moves him above Federer's eight Wimbledon crowns.
Medvedev’s hopes of becoming Russia's first male major champion since 2005 were well and truly dashed. His 20-match winning run ends on a really sour note, but you sense he’ll have another shot in a final soon. Djoker showed no sign of the abdominal issue he suffered in the round three win over Taylor Fritz and has triumphed in all nine Australian Open finals he has played in. He has won 82 of the 90 career matches he has played at Melbourne park.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! - DJOKOVIC 7-5 6-2 6-2 MEDVEDEV. It’s a very familiar story Down Under! Novak Djokovic breaks again with a delightful overhead to finish and is the 2021 Australian Open champion. He wins the title for a record-extending ninth time and claims an 18th Grand Slam crown. He’s two behind the all-time men’s major record of 20 (shared by Nadal and Federer). It was trademark Djokovic throughout what proved to be a one-sided showpiece encounter with an in-form Russian, who was featuring in his second Grand Slam final.

DJOKOVIC 7-5 6-2 5-2 MEDVEDEV. Let’s not forget Medvedev is on a 20-match winning streak. He throws everything at Djokovic including the kitchen sink! A bullet forehand winner sees him engage the crowd looking for some love at 15-30. Nole responds with a beast of a serve and more ridiculous defence and depth. He outlasts the Russian once more and points to his head to demonstrate the strength of mind he has right now. He’s one game from the title.

'Vented!' - Furious Medvedev obliterates racket after Djokovic break

DJOKOVIC 7-5 6-2 4-2 MEDVEDEV. The Russian keeps his very slim hopes alive with a hold to 15 after coming through a really testing point at 15-15. It’s still just the one service break, but he’s leaked too many errors to really look like troubling an in-the-zone Djoker.
DJOKOVIC 7-5 6-2 4-1 MEDVEDEV. Solid as a rock. The eight-time champion eases to another highly effective hold, dropping just the one point. That familiar trophy is looming ever larger on his horizon.

VIDEO: Novak pleads for the crowd to be quiet - but you could say he's also shushing the doubters!

'Pleading for silence' - Djokovic shushes crowd and breaks serve

DJOKOVIC 7-5 6-2 3-1 MEDVEDEV. Djokovic can afford to smile and applaud with such a commanding lead. He is outfoxed in a drop-shot dance-off at the net. It’s all smiles and a rare moment of cheer for Daniil. It helps him through a decent service game that sees him belatedly get on the board.
DJOKOVIC 7-5 6-2 3-0 MEDVEDEV. The only concern in the Djokovic camp will be complacency. Medvedev hits freely but can’t turn the tide as Nole crunches down a big wide serve to consolidate with a hold to 30. He’s two sets and a break to the good. That wobbles with the stomach problem against Fritz seems a long, long, long time ago now.

BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 7-5 6-2 2-0 MEDVEDEV. It’s erratic now. Medvedev has lost the plot. He needs to find focus to avoid a humbling finale. A poor volley into the net after a mixed bag of serves sums up the last set and bit for the fourth seed. Djokovic is in complete control.
VIDEO: Medvedev needs to find much more of this to try and make a match of it.

'Breathtaking' - Medvedev holds to love with stunning winner

DJOKOVIC 7-5 6-2 1-0 MEDVEDEV. That was a big, big chance for Medvedev. You have to seize those against Djokovic, but he fails quite miserably in truth. The Serb wobbles from 0-30 and when he double faults to cough up two break points. Medvedev does little to attack the second serve and from there the world number one finds clutch tennis. It’s a hold from deuce and there’s seemingly only one winner from here.
VIDEO: Novak's ability to turn defence into attack has been key so far.

SET! - DJOKOVIC 7-5 6-2 MEDVEDEV. That’s too easy. Medvedev mutters away at himself. He’s clearly rattled and Djokovic doesn’t have to bring his A-game to break once again and claim the second set. That 18th Grand Slam title and a record-extending ninth in Australia looks very much on the cards now.
DJOKOVIC 7-5 5-2 MEDVEDEV. Daniil looks a tad dejected and takes his frustration out on a racket. He battles his way back from 40-15 down to make deuce but any hope is quickly snatched away as Djokovic halts a very brief lull with a timely big serve down the middle T. The Serbinator has his radar locked on a two-set lead and is just one game away from his target.
