'I just needed to stop' - Williams opens up about retiring at US Open
A DAY AGO

WHAT'S THE STORY?

‘Serena is unfit. Serena won’t make it. Serena’s time is over.’
The pre-tournament pessimism is no more. The simple fact is Williams doesn't need to be at 100 per cent to dominate women's tennis.
The American stands two wins away from a 22nd Grand Slam title in Melbourne. Williams has crushed all those in her path – with the exception of brave Camila Giorgi in the opening round – and is overwhelming favourite to oust Radwanska and reach the final.

WHAT THEY SAID

Serena Williams: "I told myself that I'm here to have fun now. I've done everything that I didn't want to do, you know. I didn't think I would have done as well as I have. Everything from here on out, every match, is a bonus for me. I don't have to win this tournament or any other tournament for as long as I live. I really want to enjoy being a professional tennis player and playing on grand slam courts, moments like this."
Agnieszka Radwanska: "I need to get a good rest and hopefully I will be able to play my best tennis otherwise I’ll be in big trouble for sure. I think in the second week of a Grand Slam you have nothing to lose, it doesn’t matter who you are playing."
