Williams 4-3 Sharapova. A shoulder-height forehand winner across court from Sharapova, followed a couple of points later by a steaming backhand return winner across court help the Russian to keep things level at 30-all. But a 202kph ace earns Williams a game point, which she takes full advantage of with a service winner down the centre of the court.
Williams 3-3 Sharapova. A fourth double from Sharapova in just three service games is hardly a surprise as the Russian is taking an absolute age in between serves. But she recovers by taking a bit off her next first serve before going on to hold when Williams pulls a cross court forehand well wide across court followed by a backhand return long of the baseline. This match is yet to really catch fire, with little for the crowd to get into.
Williams 3-2 Sharapova. Williams continues to struggle with the sun as Sharapova gets a bit of luck when her cross court forehand is called out only to be overturned after a hawkeye challenge. It makes the difference between 40-love and 30-15. But Williams quickly follows it with an ace to bring up a game point before a forehand approach shot is pinged long by Sharapova. It's a different changeover now after three straight games in a row for the American.

Williams 2-2 Sharapova. Break. Sharapova opens with a body serve before Williams finds a belting forehand return winner that clearly unsettles Sharapova. Back-to-back double faults from the Russian, the second serve of which is only half way up the net, and Williams has been gifted a chance to break back before really finding her range. And that's exactly what happens, a backhand from Sharapova going wide across court. That will hurt. Williams hasn't quite found her rhythm and her range yet but she's back on serve without really having to do much.
Williams 1-2 Sharapova. Much better from Williams as she starts to find her rhythm, Two aces in the game certainly help and Serena slightly belatedly gets her match off the mark.
Williams 0-2 Sharapova. Sharapova is prone to double faults and slaps down her first to hand Williams a 15-30 lead against serve. The Russian quickly levels at 30-all though, as Williams continues to battle with her range, and then goes on to hold with her first ace of the afternoon.

Williams 0-1 Sharapova. Break. What a start for Sharapova as she breaks for the opening game of the match. Williams clearly is having trouble adjusting to the sun and hands Sharapova the break with three consecutive backhand errors.

Here we go then. The players are ready to go and it will be Williams to get the clash underway by serving first ...

Sharapova and Williams have had a long rivalry, their first clash dating all the way back to 2004, 12 years ago. Rivalry could be said to be a little bit mis-leading though as Williams leads the head-to-heads by an overwhelming 18 wins to just two in Sharapova's favour. The Russian has not beaten Williams since their second and third meetings back in 2004. Since then she has suffered 17 straight defeats at the hands of Williams, 14 of them in straight sets.
