The reigning Australian Open Champion seemed to be going through the motions in a fairly routine encounter for the first two sets, a frustrating experience for the world no.55, who fell just short of being able to provide any real challenge to Federer.
In an opening set, won 6-4 by Federer in just 32 minutes, Struff had some excellent shots, but was not able to take advantage of any errors made by the world no.2.
Federer looked aggressive in the second set but Struff held his own until Federer broke his serve in the seventh game, eventually taking the second set by the same score of 6-4.
Struff looked to be easing off somewhat initially in the third set, perhaps the result looking a foregone conclusion, though he was ready to challenge that assumption before too long, defending three break points in the third game.
The crowd began to get behind Struff as he fought back to take a 3-1 lead over Federer, which was shortly squandered. At 5-5 in the third set, Struff saw off two break points to stay in the game, ultimately forcing a tie-break, though it was not enough to prevent the inevitable as Federer won the tie-break 7-4 and the match 6-4, 6-4, 7-6.
Federer will play Richard Gasquet in the third round.
