The drama came in the third set when a frustrated Shapovalov smashed the ball away and caught umpire Arnaud Gabas square in the face with a vicious hit.
Shapovalov was defaulted and Great Britain were handed the 3-2 win. GB will face France in the quarter-finals.
"I'm ashamed, it was unacceptable," Shapovalov said afterwards.
Earlier in the day, Dan Evans was beaten by Vasek Pospisil which meant that the tie would go to a decider.
