Nadal was in sensational form last season as he won a historic tenth title, and he has lost just once on clay in 2018
"The last couple of weeks have been good. Of course having the success gives me more confidence and I'm always motivated here to play as well as possible," said Nadal, who won claycourt titles in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome this season.
The in-form Alex Zverev will face Ricardas Berankis in the first round as he bids for his debut Grand Slam and his first victory against a member of the top 50 at a slam.
Dominic Thiem, the only man to beat Nadal so far this season on clay, will face a qualifier.
Juan Martin del Potro will face Nicolas Mahut who is the French wildcard whilst former champion Novak Djokovic will face a qualifier, as will Nick Kyrgios.
Edmund was given a tough draw against the hugely exciting wildcard Alex De Minaur.
Compatriot Cameron Norrie, who defeated John Isner in straight sets to reach the semi-finals in Lyon on Thursday, was drawn against Peter Gojowczyk.
There were plenty of all-American ties and the highlight was Sam Querrey being drawn against Frances Tiafoe.
