Murray, who turns 20 today, has been through a frustrating time on the ATP tour recently and is in danger of dropping out of the world top ten after failing to win for six weeks.
He has played two Davis Cup rounds in that time and suggested that with such a packed schedule he should follow the likes of world numbers one and two Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in quitting the cup scene.
"I think the older you get you have to decide what the most important things are for you to do," said Murray.
"Federer and Nadal – Nadal's what, 20 years old now, and he's started missing David Cup as well – and I just think you have to decide what your priorities are."
"Nadal's got ready for the French Open and that's probably why he's missed the Davis Cup.
"They miss Federer in Switzerland when he doesn't play Davis Cup ten times more than [the British team misses] me, so you have to think about the tour first before the Davis Cup because at the end of the day that's where you're making your career from."
British team captain John Lloyd is determined not to lose his nation's number one player from the scene, even if can see exactly why the youngster wants out.
And he has called on tournament organisers to act quickly to stop more of the world's top players following suit.
Lloyd said: "I don't have a problem with what Andy said. It is a trend which has to be addressed by people running the Davis Cup.
"Andy is basing his career a lot on Roger Federer and the trend is there. I am sure he will play [Britain's next tie] against Croatia but he has to plan for a ten-year career and I think it is no bad thing for the top ten players to voice their opinions."
Murray kicks off his Hamburg Masters campaign today against Italian Filippo Volandri. You can follow the whole match LIVE from 12:30 CET.
