Bernard Tomic falls to surprise defeat against Bjorn Fratangelo at Indian Wells

Bernard Tomic suffered a shock defeat against American wildcard Bjorn Fratangelo in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open.

The 6-2 6-2 loss against the world number 112 is a further setback for Tomic, who has now been eliminated in the opening round in each of his last four ATP Tour appearances.
Fratangelo, ranked 70 places below his Australian opponent, wrapped up the win in just over an hour and will play 13th seed Tomas Berdych in round two at Indian Wells.
Nikoloz Basilashvili also fell to a surprise elimination at the hands of Barbados' Darian King in straight sets in California.
World number 131 King won 7-5 7-5 against the Georgian to set up a second-round clash against Gael Monfils.
Argentina's Diego Schwartzman was beaten 4-6 6-3 6-4 by Portugal's Joao Sousa while Italy's Paolo Lorenzi saw off Holland's Robin Haase 6-4 6-3 to set up a second-round tie with Stan Wawrinka.
Serbia's Dusan Lajovic made light work of American Frances Tiafoe in a 6-3 6-3 victory, Alexandr Dolgopolov beat Viktor Troicki 6-1 6-4 and Yoshihito Nishioka emerged as a 6-4 6-1 winner against Elias Ymer.
There were also first-round wins for Adrian Mannarino, Karen Khachanov, Peter Gojowczyk, Martin Klizan and Fabio Fognini while Mikhail Kukushkin benefited from Jordan Thompson's retirement.
