Stan Wawrinka ended Dan Evans’ tournament in the first round after overcoming the Briton in three sets at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
The Swiss fought back from a set down to prevail 6-7 (4) 6-3 6-3.
Evans failed to convert six break points in the decider, opening up a 5-3 lead for Wawrinka who held the world number 100 to love in the final game and wrapped up the win after two hours on court.
The world number 40 goes on to face 29th seed Marton Fucsovics.
In the day’s other games, qualifier Radu Albot overcame Marius Copil 6-2 6-2.
On the back of his maiden ATP Tour title at the Delray Beach Open, the world number 53 needed just 62 minutes to oust Romania’s Copil.
Hubert Hurkacz, meanwhile, defeated wild card Donald Young 6-3 6-3 and American Steve Johnson routed compatriot Taylor Fritz by the same scoreline.
