The Briton almost let a set and 2-0 lead slip in Moscow.
Johanna Konta recovered from a second-set wobble to defeat Daria Gavrilova and move into the Kremlin Cup quarter-finals in Moscow.
The British number one was a set and 2-0 ahead but missed out on claiming the double break before losing six of the next seven games as Gavrilova forced a decider.
However, Konta held her nerve to secure a 6-4 3-6 6-3 victory over her Australian opponent in two hours and nine minutes to prolong her season for at least one more match.
The world number 44, who faces Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the last eight, plans to end a modest 2018 campaign after this tournament.
