Andy Roddick needed two and a half hours and five match points to beat Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic 6-4 6-7 (9-11) 6-1 in their Masters Cup round-robin opener in Shanghai on Sunday.
Frustrated at his inability to break Ljubicic in the second set after cruising through the first, Roddick lambasted an umpire over a line call that helped put him down 5-4 in the second set.
"Either you're lying or you're really bad at your job," Roddick told umpire Mohamed Lahyani.
Roddick went onto blow two match points in a gruelling tie-break, before losing the set to Ljubicic 7-6 (11-9).
At that point it looked as though Ljubicic had clearly shifted the momentum, but Roddick quickly recovered.
The No. 1 American broke Ljubicic twice to serve for the victory, though he got his first double-fault of the match on his second chance at match point in the third set.
Roddick ultimately took his fifth match point with an easy serve and volley for the winner and the win.
