The Swiss trails only Spaniard Carlos Moya, who has won 516 matches in a career he started three years before Federer.
The world number one won his first professional match when he beat France's Guillaume Raoux 6-2 6-2 in September 1998 at the Toulouse tournament.
"I remember he was coming from, I think, a Davis Cup tie in Israel and was tired," Federer said.
"I took him down. But I think that's what it was, really. I was playing unbelievable.
"I remember Marc Rosset was there. He was so happy for me. He was kind of guiding me around helping me book practice courts and, you know, how things work," he added.
"Of course, the first few questions came right away. What are you going to do with your first prize money? Put it in the Swiss bank. That was my answer."
By beating Ferrer, Federer won his 500th match but also went past the $30-million mark in career earnings.
"Two incredible numbers," he said.
