Nick Kyrgios has been spared a criminal record after admitting assaulting an ex-girlfriend during a row in January 2021. Kyrgios won the Australian Open doubles title last year alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis, while he also finished runner-up at Wimbledon in 2022. The 27-year-old is currently recuperating from knee surgery that ruled him out of the recent Australian Open.
Nick Kyrgios has pleaded guilty to assaulting an ex-girlfriend but avoided a criminal conviction.
The Australian tennis star, 27, appeared in a Canberra court after his lawyers failed to get the charge dismissed on mental health grounds.
However, the magistrate did not impose a conviction, saying the assault was “low level” and not premeditated.
The court heard Kyrgios pushed Chiara Passari to the pavement during an argument in January 2021 after she stood in the door of an Uber to stop him from leaving.
"I respect today's ruling and am grateful to the court for dismissing the charges without conviction," Kyrgios said in a statement on social media.
"I was not in a good place when this took place and I reacted to a difficult situation in a way I deeply regret. I know it wasn't OK and I'm sincerely sorry for the hurt I caused.
"Mental health is tough. Life can seem overwhelming. But I've found that getting help and working on myself has helped me to feel better and to be better."
Kyrgios, runner-up at Wimbledon last year, appeared at the hearing on crutches as he recovers from arthroscopic surgery on his knee.
