Querrey out of Delray Beach Open after falling to Fritz

The number four seed joined the tournament days after reaching the New York Open final.

American Sam Querrey was knocked out of the Delray Beach Open by Taylor Fritz in a first round upset.
The number four seed, ranked by the ATP as the world number 12, was beaten by his countryman, ranked 85th, 2-6 6-3 7-6 (7/4) on the second day of the Florida tournament.
Querrey’s failure to progress came after losing to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the New York Open final on Monday.
Earlier on Tuesday, American wild card and sixth seed John Isner had battled into the second round with a 5-7 6-3 6-4 win over Radu Albot of Moldova.
Milos Raonic, the number nine seed from Canada, saw off Japan’s Taro Daniel 6-1 7-5, but lucky loser Peter Polansky went out after his 7-6 (8/6) 6-1 defeat by Jared Donaldson of the United States.
Croatian Franko Skugor defeated Alexander Bublik 6-2 7-5 and will next play Hyeon Chung, the number eight seed from South Korea in round two.
Peter Gojowczyk of Germany booked his second-round showdown with Isner after coming from behind to beating Lukas Lacko 3-6 7-5 6-1.
Reilly Opelka also progressed after winning through 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (8/6) against fellow American Ryan Harrison and will play top seed Jack Sock, the world number eight, for a place in the quarter-finals.
In Tuesday’s other late match, Russian Mikhail Youzhny won against Dudi Sela of Israel 7-5 6-4 and will meet Fritz in the second round.
At the Open 13 Provence in Marseille, number eight seed Filip Krajinovic had to come from behind to beat Joao Sousa 3-6 6-4 6-4 and book his place in round two.
It was smoother progress for Russian ninth seed Karen Khachanov, who saw off Belgium’s Ruben Bemelmans in straight sets, 6-3 7-6 (7/2).
Frenchman Gilles Simon beat Maximilian Marterer of Germany 7-6 (7/3) 7-6 (7/4), while compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert defeated qualifier Norbert Gombos 6-2 7-6 (7/3) to set up a second-round tie against number three seed Lucas Pouille.
There were also first-round wins for Italian Stefano Travaglia and Ilya Ivashka, the Belarus qualifier now scheduled to face top seed Stan Wawrinka, the world number 13.
At the Rio Open, Gael Monfils slugged it out with Horacio Zeballos to win 7-5 3-6 7-5 and will play top seed Marin Cilic in the second round.
Spaniard Pablo Andujar beat Gerald Melzer in straight sets 7-5 6-2 and will meet number two seed Dominic Thiem, who defeated Dusan Lajovic 6-2 7-5.
Pablo Carreno Busta comfortably beat Marco Cecchinato 6-4 6-1 and will play Aljaz Bedene, who saw off Andreas Haider-Maurer 7-5 6-0.
Sixth seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina progressed after Norwegian qualifier Casper Ruud retired when 4-1 down in the opening set.
He will play Federico Delbonis, whose Czech opponent Jiri Vesely retired when trailing 2-6 2-3.
Number seven seed Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay is also through after battling to a 6-7 (5/7) 7-6 (12/10) 6-3 win over Brazilian Thiago Monteiro in a match which lasted almost three hours.
Nicolas Kicker, who defeated Victor Estrella Burgos 6-3 6-3, will play number eight seed Fernando Verdasco.
