So, we're just about and eventually done - see you back here for the afternoon session. Night!

So there we are. When all's said and done, Federer has won again, looking fit and strong in the process; he'll be the better for the workout and plays Kavcic or Youzhny next.

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 6-4 Tiafoe

This is brilliant, compelling, dramatic stuff, and Tiafoe, perhaos still celebrating the previous game, allows Federer into this one, hitting long and then into the net; 0-30. He can't get his first serve in and Federer has a huge chance on the forehand, but nets himself. Oh dear; a long rally, Tiafoe nets a backhand when he could easily have run around it to unleash the fore, and he's now two match points down. But Federer nets a backhand of his own! Third match point coming up ... and he low return forces Tiafoe to net! FEDERER HAS DONE IT! BUT FRANCES TIAFOE IS GOING TO BE A STAR! WHAT A PERFORMANCE FROM HIM! WHAT SKILL, WHAT POWER, WHAT MENTAL STRENGTH! I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE HIM AGAIN!

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 5-4 Tiafoe

Federer nets a forehand to give Tiafoe a sniff, but is quickly onto a short return to clean up. Tiafoe then nets his next return only for Federer to net a volley; he really should've put that away. As such, he fires an ace down the middle - Tiafoe challenges, but it's right on the outside of the line - but he can't convert the matchpoint! Tiafoe plays a clever shot across the face of the net and Federer nets his volley! Again! So he responds with an ace again, Tiafoe challenges, and this time it is wide! Federer then hits a forehand wide! What is going on! Break point! Another ace down the middle, another challenge! It's on the outside of the line! Break point saved! Phew.

Oh I say! Tiafoe plays a wondrous forehand cross-court for break point, then as Federer coes to the net he passes him down the line! THIS IS AMAZING!

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 5-3 Tiafoe

Federer wants to go home, but Tiafoe isn't letting him. At 0-15, he smites a forehand down the line after a backhand opened the space, wins the next three points too, and The Fed will have to serve it out!

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 5-2 Tiafoe

Federer is so solid on serve (when he's so solid on serve). He's only conceded one point this set and that took a forehand of epic proportions. Another love hold, a "Come on!" and he's nearly home.

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 4-2 Tiafoe

And still Tiafoe won't go away; why should he? He's bloody good and he knows he is; this is his stage. He wins a love game.

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 4-1 Tiafoe

Surely this is now, finally, did. Federer does lose his first service point of the set, courtesy of that magical forehand, but that's all Tiafoe can muster.

An actual adult is doing this.

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 3-1 Tiafoe

Federer slides ahead in the game by way of a lovely backhand slice but Tiafoe pegs him back then wallops yet another forehand to go 30-15. Federer, though, is returning far better than at the start of the match and a forehand levels things again before Tiafoe rockets one of his own long and wide; he challenges to no avail and that's break point. His home crowd cheer a fault - that's real nice, that - and then he plays an injudicious drop which Federer pastes past him on the backhand. He can't believe he did that!

Majestic stuff from Federer!

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 2-1 Tiafoe

Federer is back to looking impregnable on serve, an d his back looks fine as he hammers down a leaping overhead. Second love-hold in a row after being broken twice in a row.

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 1-1 Tiafoe

Tiafoe plays a lovely backhand down the line, opening the court for a forehand winner which wrongfoots Federer, and another forehand gives him 30-0. Federer has never lost in the first round here, and the possibility of a final set tiebreaker probably makes that more likely. Anyway, Tiafoe holds to 30 and is in the decider. He is also 19!

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 1-0 Tiafoe

In a one set shoot-out, it's tempting to back the man with the bigger serve, especially when it's backed up by a forehand such as Tiafoe's. But Federer is Federer and he looks businesslike again, racing through a love game to let his man know that things are real.

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 Tiafoe

At 30-0, Tiafoe plays a delicious oblique volley, then chucks in a double fault going for a second serve ace; good for him. And a murderous forehand is then too much for Federer, and we've got ourselves a decider! Unbelievable! For the last hour it's looked a formality that Federer would win in four, now he might lose in five! Tiafoe is hitting the ball beautifully now, and also getting himself into the correct position to return Federer's best shots.

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-5 Tiafoe

Tiafoe is making Federer hit more balls now, even in the points that he loses; perhaps he's getting a better read on him. And what a point he plays to get 15-30, haring to the net after a booming forehand, then swiping two volleys until Federer couldn't retort. And suddenly it's 15-40! What on earth is going on?! Oh wow! Tiafoe has the double break, and will serve for 2-2! This is incredible! He's found his power, he's found his confidence, and is blazing away like the clappers!

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-4 Tiafoe

Perhaps Federer lost concentration, and he certainly didn't make Tiafoe hit winners, but Tiafoe still did well to stick with him given what's happened in the last two sets. Federer ought really to break straight back - from 15-30, he has plenty of chances - but Tiafoe wins three points in a row to win three games in a row, and we might just have ourselves a decider!

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-3 Tiafoe

Tiafoe gets to 30 on the Federer serve and forces his way into the next rally ... and Federer goes long with a squash shot from the baseline! Deuce! Federer gets lucky with a loopy one off the frame, then hands Tiafoe the break-point with an errant backhand! And another errant backhand gives Tiafoe the break! Who saw that coming!

Roger Federer produced some majestic tennis in the second set as he drew level against Frances Tiafoe.

Video - ‘That’s what you come for’ – Federer wins sublime point

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-2 Tiafoe

Tiafoe retorts with a swift hold of his own. He's 19 years-old! The question, I guess, is how does he develop to reach the standard of the best? Men's tennis seems to have a problem in that regard.

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-1 Tiafoe

Tiafoe is not going to break Federer again; it'll take a breaker if he's to make an impression. He's not had a break point for an hour and 40 minutes.

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 0-1 Tiafoe

Tiafoe is sticking to his task as you'd expect, and wins the first game of the fourth to 15. He needed that, and if he can get his first serves in and the ball on his forehand, he's hard to stop.

Federer 4-6 6-2 6-1 Tiafoe

Federer is serving for the set; I think he might pull it off, wbu? Amazingly, he finds himself at 30-all; unamazingly amazingly, he puts together two perfect points, and the deal is done.

Federer 4-6 6-2 5-1 Tiafoe

Federer has perhaps cooled a little, or at least, not everything he hits is devastating. he still breaks again, mind, a backhand down the line forcing the error from Tiafoe, who raises head and eyes skywards. I'm sorry, old boy; this is the way of the world.

Federer 4-6 6-2 3-1 Tiafoe

Another love-hold for Mr Ridiculous. Tiafoe has no clue how to play him, and isn't being given the time or space to unleash that forehand. What can you do, eh.

Federer 4-6 6-2 3-1 Tiafoe

Tiafoe looks shellshocked, stunned by the improvement of the best player in the history of tennis and perhaps the history of all sport. Since missing that easy backhand for 3-1 he has been majestic; untouchable. But Tiafoe, despite having lost four games in a row and seven of the last eight is still fighting. He gets to 40-30, can't convert, but eventually hangs on.

Federer 4-6 6-2 3-0 Tiafoe

Federer is federing and Tiafoe is having to play better than he ever has simply to not hang in there. Federer holds to 15 and everything is working in perfect harmony.

Federer 4-6 6-2 2-0 Tiafoe

This is over, basically. Federer breaks, clinching the key point with a tremendous forehand. Please excuse me, I was momentarily distracted by the below.

Federer 4-6 6-2 1-0 Tiafoe

Thanks to that second break, Federer is now serving first in the third set, and he does not waste the advantage, holding to 15. Since he was broken in the second game, he has only lost four points on serve.

Federer 4-6 6-2 Tiafoe

Oh dear. Tiafoe opens the game with a double fault ad then when Federer comes it, he can't pass him. Federer is now getting back Tiafoe's best shots, flicking back a banging forehand before arranging three set points at the net. Tiafoe saves the first, but only the first, and that's one set apiece. I sense that the greatest of all-time my win the match from here.

Federer 4-6 5-2 Tiafoe

Federer is serving like Federer now; he's comfortable. And he needs one more game to level the match; if he can do it with a break, that'll really emphasise his superiority.

Federer 4-6 4-2 Tiafoe

"Tiafoe's gotta reassure himself here with some fine play," advises Frew McMillan, but he can't. Federer is quickly 15-30 ahead, and though Tiafoe claws back, a double fault gives a point for a double break. Federer, though, goes wide with a backhand, and only needs one deuce to right himself.

Federer 4-6 4-1 Tiafoe

Federer looks like a man who's not played a lot of tennis (lately). But he consolidates to 15, and will surely close it out from here.

Federer 4-6 4-1 Tiafoe

Federer gets himself to 30-all and Tiafoe goes long with a forehand; second break point of the match for Federer. Tiafoe goes wide with his first serve, but then after he hits the net cord to rescue a horrible pick-up, Federer races into the net and somehow misses his backhand put-away! But then Federer hits the net cord and Tiafoe misses similarly to present another break point ... Federer bunts a return back into court, Tiafoe finds himself at the net shortly afterwards, and can't put away his volley! That was a game of decidedly low-quality, but might just mark a change in the momentum of this match.

Federer 4-6 2-1 Tiafoe

The court is playing really quickly, and Federer appears to be upping his own power in response to Tiafoe's natural disposition. He holds easily, but can he find a return or two?

Federer 4-6 1-1 Tiafoe

Tiafoe misses a backhand down the line, coming in, and given how he's serving, the 30-all offers Federer a chance. But he goes long with a return, before another backhand error from Tiafoe takes us to deuce. Seconds later, the game is done.

Federer 4-6 1-0 Tiafoe

In winning that set Tiafoe did what no one at Wimbledon could do; Federer now knows he's in a match, and that Tiafoe won't wilt under pressure. He served out that set beautifully, and not just in the clinching game but in the two before it too. Anyway, Federer holds, but needs deuce and advantage so to do.

Federer 4-6 Tiafoe

Federer clips the line with a lovely backhand slice, but then nets with the same shot; three more points needed by Tiafoe. He gets the first with a monstrous forehand - you have to be so careful when sending the ball anywhere near it. Federer then goes long with a forehand of his own, Tiafoe spanks another forehand from the centre of the court to the forehand side, and TIAFOE WINS THE FIRST SET! FANTASTIC!

Federer 4-5 Tiafoe

A love hold from Federer in just over a minute, and in a minute and a half, Tiafoe will serve for the first set. who ever supposed to type those words?!

Federer 3-5 Tiafoe

Federer is miscuing a lot tonight, and Tiafoe is whipping his forehands like nobody's business. He gets to 40-15, and then Federer, with most of the court to aim for, nets a forehand; that's 10/11 points on serve to the American.

Federer 3-4 Tiafoe

The points and games are coming quickly now, and Federer sorts another hold; can he find the break-back?

Federer 2-4 Tiafoe

Federer isn't quite accustomed to Tiafoe's serve, and after struggles in his first two service games nonetheless, this time Tiafoe races through to love.

Federer 2-3 Tiafoe

Amazing defence from Federer gets him 30-0, and an ace follows; he's getting warm. But just as I type that, a double fault follows and then a long backhand from the net. He mops up thereafter, though/

Federer 1-3 Tiafoe

Tiafoe's serve is so beautifully simple: he throws the ball up and whacks it hard and fast. But it takes him a while to secure his second service game - four deuces, in fact - but he gets there in the end, and only needs three more for a set advantage.

Federer 1-2 Tiafoe

This umpire loves being part of things. He is not part of things. Anyway, Tiafoe gets to 30-all and has a chance when a net cord sits the ball up for his monstrous forehand, but he can't make the next one, and shortly afterwards Federer is on the board.

Federer 0-2 Tiafoe

The standard here is not high - well, not thus far. Tiafoe, though, saves a break point with a heavily topspun forehand down the line, which is more like it ... but after a service winner gets him advantage, he chucks down a double fault. Still, he holds on to consolidate, and we have ourselves a ball-game!

Federer 0-1 Tiafoe

Tiafoe wins the first point of the match, and though Federer wins the second, it's soon 15-40! And Federer miscues again, ceding the break! Tiafoe didn't have to do much to achieve that, but achieve that he did!

Tiafoe is out, and now here comes the man.

For his part, Tiafoe is in nick, having beaten Zverev in Cincinnati. He'll absolutely love this stage, and sooner or later he's going to properly announce himself on the big stage.

Federer has a lower back problem, apparently, and the weather won't be that helpful. But he's already pretty chuffed with his year's work, so whatever.

Evening all. It's time for Roger Federer! And it's time for Francis Tiafoe! This should be great.
