As Djokovic soaks up the plaudits and has his picture taken with the trophy, all that is left is for me to say that's it for our coverage of the 2018 US Open. Join us again soon for more action from the world of tennis.

Djokovic

More from Djoker on equalling Sampras' Grand Slam haul: "I was hoping he was going to be here tonight, but he's not. I just want to say, Pete, you are my idol. I love you and I'll see you again soon... on the court hopefully!"

Djokovic puts his recent success down to the support of loved ones, talks about learning from the adversity of his elbow surgery and pays tribute to Del Potro.

Del Potro 2018 US Open runner up: "It's not easy to speak right now, but I love you too guys (to the fans singing his name). I'm so happy to be playing the final against this magnificent idol. He's one of my good friends on tour and one player I want to see winning titles is him. I'm sad because I wanted to win, but happy for Novak and his team."

MEN'S ALL-TIME GRAND SLAM WINNERS LIST: Federer 20, Nadal 17, Djokovic and Sampras 14.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! - DJOKOVIC 6-3 7-6 6-3 DEL POTRO. It's all over as Djokovic holds his nerve to serve it out 30! There's no fairytale of New York for Delpo as the Djoker claims his third US Open crown with a straight sets victory in three hours and 15 minutes. The Serb now has 14 Grand Slam titles and that puts him level with the legendary Pete Sampras in third place in the list of all-time major winners. He will start next week as the World No.3 and just 455 points behind Roger Federer in second. With no points to defend for the rest of the year and Rafael Nadal's fitness in question, the Serb could yet end 2018 as the world No.1 after some big struggles at the start of it. Watch this space.

BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 6-3 7-6 5-3 DEL POTRO. It's all but over. Djoker finds the zone with his return game before an untimely first double fault of the match from Delpo gives the Serb two break points. Novak senses the moment and outlasts the Argentine in a lengthy rally. He will now serve for the championship.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 7-6 4-3 DEL POTRO. Nole is too nonchalant at the net and is made to pay to trail 15-30. The crowd roar for Delpo, but he horribly miscues off the forehand to let his opponent back in. Djokovic stands firm and once again finds a way through after facing a tricky situation. It's these types of key moments that will ultimately decide this title.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 7-6 3-3 DEL POTRO. A sixth ace, a big forehand and a thumping serve do the damage as del Potro moves level with a hold to 15.

BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 6-3 7-6 3-2 DEL POTRO. Delpo considers that he's probably swigging at the last chance saloon and comes out with the forehand blazing. He has a glimmer of hope at 15-30 but sees the door slammed shut. Djoker gets twitchy at deuce and slams a forehand into the net. The Serb then gets a time violation on break point and is outfoxed in a face-off at the net. Delpo volleys the winner, fist pumps and roars with delight. He's not giving up just yet!

BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 6-3 7-6 3-1 DEL POTRO. That is sensational from Djokovic. He sees a break point wiped out by a blockbusting first serve but then produces some of the best defence you'll have ever seen on a tennis court before lashing home a crosscourt pass to earn a second bite of the cherry. Delpo looks deflated and hooks a wild backhand long in the next rally to cough up a break that further strengthens Djoker's grip on the trophy.

Glum reading for Delpo fans - fantastic for Djoker's supporters.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 7-6 2-1 DEL POTRO. A surprising missed volley off the backhand makes life trickier than it should have been for Djoker, but he inevitably recovers to claim a hold to 30 with a clinical overhead.

When you're two sets to the good and on course for a second Grand Slam title of the year.

Novak Djokovic / US Open

DJOKOVIC 6-3 7-6 1-1 DEL POTRO. No obvious signs that that tie break loss has broken any of Delpo's spirit. He powers through a hold to 15 to get on the board.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 7-6 1-0 DEL POTRO. An epic point concludes the opening game and it's Novak that again wins the significant ones. He holds to 30 and has that two-set lead and the scoreboard advantage in Set 3.

History, head-to-head stats and logic suggest there will only be one winner now.

SET! - DJOKOVIC 6-3 7-6 DEL POTRO. After soaking up so much pressure, Djokovic recovers in the tie break, roaring back from 3-1 down to win 7-4 and claim a two-set lead. He's one away from a 14th Grand Slam title and it's a long, long way back for Delpo from here.

Novak Djokovic

TB LATEST: It's all square at 3-3 at the change of ends. We started with a host of mini breaks before Delpo moved 3-1 to the good. Djoker hit back and it's finely poised.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-6 DEL POTRO. A 13-time Grand Slam champion knows how to handle pressure and Djoker uses all of that know-how to blitz through a comfortable hold to love. It's tie break time and what a huge moment this is in the match. You sense Delpo has to win it if he's to end the encounter as the champion....

DJOKOVIC 6-3 5-6 DEL POTRO. Juan Martin maintains the scoreboard pressure with some big serving - and a fifth ace of the night - to hold to 15. He's guaranteed a tie break, but can he upset Novak right at the death?

Juan Martin del Potro / US Open

DJOKOVIC 6-3 5-5 DEL POTRO. That's a much more routine - and very welcome - hold for Novak as he seals it to 15 with a crisp volley at the net. Its five apiece and if anyone blinks now it'll cost them the set.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 4-5 DEL POTRO. Nole slaps his racket on the floor in disappointment as he hooks a tame backhand into the net at 40-30 after a super return had got him into the point. You feel Delpo MUST make the breakthrough while he has the momentum if he wants t keep his dream of lifting the trophy for a second time alive.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 4-4 DEL POTRO. It's the game of the match and a BIG missed opportunity for Delpo. He's been riding the crest of a wave and follows up another wonderful forehand winner with a backhand pearl down the line to snare break point. He then snatches at a backhand too early and lets Djoker off the hook.

The Serb's ice-cool demeanour has been conspicuous by its absence since 3-1 and he fires what looks like a simple forehand winner straight at his opponent, who guides it into the empty court for a second chance. Delpo then blazes a scorching crosscourt forehand an inch long and from there Nole just about wriggles free to level after some twitchy moments at deuce. The Serb saved THREE break points in total in a sensational game lasting over 20 minutes.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 3-4 DEL POTRO. There has been a shift here. Whether it lasts remains to be seen. Delpo starts with a service winner and concludes with an ace while in-between clouting that forehand. He holds to love and has that scoreboard advantage as we enter the business end of the set.

Del Potro

BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 6-3 3-3 DEL POTRO. The spectators inside Ashe got behind Delpo in that last game and the energy seems to have fed him! He unloads three incredible forehands to earn break point and the roof almost comes off. Djoker gets off the hook when the Argentine passes just long, but he's clearly rattled as he surprisingly clatters a forehand against the net cord and out. The Serb then follows it up with another wild shot into the alley and we are back on serve!

DJOKOVIC 6-3 3-2 DEL POTRO. Juan Martin comes under the microscope once more on serve but brings the crowd to life with a couple of superb points, including a stunning backhand winner down the line to clinch the hold to 30.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 3-1 DEL POTRO. Djoker consolidates to 15 with the minimum of fuss. Del Potro is plugging away but everything he is throwing at the No.6 seed just keeps coming back at him.

Novak Djokovic - Finale de l'US Open 2018

BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 6-3 2-1 DEL POTRO. This pressure is becoming relentless. Delpo needs a huge serve just to lead 30-15, but is soon facing another break point when he blazes a blistering forehand long. The Argentine then scoops horribly long as he tries to back pedal to the baseline. Huge advantage to Novak now.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 1-1 DEL POTRO. Tennis is often a game of shifting momentum, but how Delpo needs a swing in his direction soon. The No.3 seed is struggling to put Djokovic under any serious pressure. At 40-15 down he surges into the net but is easily passed by the Serb who seems to be seeing the ball like a giant football right now.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 0-1 DEL POTRO. That's a massive hold for the Argentine. He nails a big forehand and a second ace to hit back from 0-30, but then Novak digs in with some sublime returning to make deuce. The Serb slides a backhand up the line for a break opportunity but then blows it with an uncharacteristic miss off the same flank. Del Potro saves another break point and finally lands a big serve and forehand to earn some cheaper, faster points and drag himself over the line. If he somehow goes on to turn the tide and win this match, this could be a game he looks back on as one of great significance.

SET! - DJOKOVIC 6-3 DEL POTRO. The No.6 seed from Serbia strikes first blood after 42 minutes as he keeps Delpo's bid to bite straight back at bay by serving out to 30. Djoker had to be patient and defend strong from baseline, but he got the job done and looks strong. That's a big blow for Delpo who knows the first set was important for his belief.

BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 5-3 DEL POTRO. A first ace of the match puts Delpo firmly in control at 40-0, but some wayward shots off the forehand and some outrageous Djoker defence sees the Serb take five points in a row and claim the first break of the match at the first time of asking. He will now serve for the set.

DJOKOVIC 4-3 DEL POTRO. Nole edges his nose in front once more. The serving has been superb from both players so far and Delpo can't make any impression this time as the 13-time Grand Slam winner chalks up the love hold.

DJOKOVIC 3-3 DEL POTRO. All square as Delpo overcomes an early glitch on the forehand to thunder his way through another hold for the loss of one point. Plenty to enjoy and admire so far, but we are still waiting for the first moment of significance in this final.

DJOKOVIC 3-2 DEL POTRO. Juan Martin just misses with a forehand attempt at 15-15 and from there Novak finds some big serves, finishing off the game with a crisp crosscourt forehand winner. It's been top-class tennis so far from both players.

DJOKOVIC 2-2 DEL POTRO. Delpo has brought the heat right from the off here. He does some real damage with the forehand before claiming a comfortable hold to 15 with a sweet backhand winner.

DJOKOVIC 2-1 DEL POTRO. The Argentine builds some momentum at 0-30 but then comes unstuck with a pair of errors off his less convincing backhand side. Djoker moves ahead with a crosscourt forehand but Delpo responds in the same vein - AND interest to make deuce. A lengthy rally then goes the way of the Serb, who manages to dig out the hold as Delpo's tendency to slice off his backhand does him no favours.

Indeed.

DJOKOVIC 1-1 DEL POTRO. Juan Martin makes a blistering start. He lands some big first serves and unloads that trusty forehand as he cruises to a love hold. He'll need to maintain that sort of consistency all night if he's going to upset Novak.

Delpo's has been slightly trickier, but he was no doubt helped by Nadal's early retirement from their semi final match. Those two have slugged it out for hours in their most recent meetings.

Personally feel that Djokovic has had a very kind draw from round one to tonight.

DJOKOVIC 1-0 DEL POTRO. The majority of the crowd are rooting for Delpo. It's a fact somewhat emphasised by the cheer of delight when Nole misfires off the forehand in the opening the point. Not that it ruffles the feathers of the Serb though as he motors back to ease to a hold to 30 to open.

Delpo: "He's playing so good. He will be the favourite to win. But I don't know. When I played Roger (Federer) nine years ago, he was the favourite to win, as well. I will try to make the surprise again."

On Saturday night the women's final saw the underdog Naomi Osaka triumph. However, the Japanese youngster's fairytale win was overshadowed by Serena Williams' war of words with the umpire. The American has since been fined $17,000 for her code violations. Could we have similar drama tonight?

It's probably unlikely, but you never know!
