Nadal: "It has been an amazing final. Tonight everybody saw why he is the number four player already at 23 years old. The way he was able to fight, change the rhythm of the match was just incredible.'
He added: "It has been one of the most emotional nights in my tennis career."

Indeed. The new world number four could very soon be breaking up that 'big three' monopoly.
Medvedev full of warm humour in his speech. Very charming from the Russian, who will win even more fans for both his fighting spirit on court and this show of humility.
So much emotion from Rafa as he awaits the trophy presentation in his chair. Medvedev looks forlorn but must be so proud of his effort.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! - NADAL 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 6-4 MEDVEDEV. Rafael Nadal has done it! He's the US Open champion for the fourth time after seeing off first-time Grand Slam finalist, Medvedev following an epic four hours and 49 minutes. The world number two was on the ropes after the 23-year-old Russian hit back from two sets down to take it to a decider. Nadal looked stunned but somehow recovered and eventually served it out at the second time of asking on his third match point. It's the Spaniard's 19th major title and his second of the season, following on from his triumph at the French Open. It means Rafa is now just one behind Roger Federer (20) and three ahead of Novak Djokovic (16) on the leader board of most Slams ever won.
Medvedev still hasn't won a five-set match and will be disappointed his maiden major final appearance ended in defeat after playing some incredible tennis to turn the match on its head.

NADAL 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 5-4 MEDVEDEV. Daniil manages to drag himself over the line after saving two match points. Over to Nadal now to try and serve it out at the second time of asking.
MATCH POINTS SAVED! Wow. This is sensational. It really is. Nadal hits an awesome drop volley at the net to snare match point, but Medvedev produces a sublime winner to save it. A sizzling forehand earns Nadal a second chance but a bold serve and volley on the second serve keeps Medvedev alive.

BREAK! - NADAL 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 5-3 MEDVEDEV. The plot thickens. Nadal's defence sees him somehow win the point following another brutal rally to lead 30-15 and move within two points of the title. However, he then misfires off both flanks, before another time violation means he's on a second serve on break point. This time he can't settle himself and he double faults to hand one break back. Surely, Medvedev can't do it from here, can he?

BREAK! - NADAL 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 5-2 MEDVEDEV. It's deja vu! Nadal fights back again, this time earning another break point with a sublime drop shot from 30-0 down. Medvedev then blows an overhead long and the world number two has the cushion of a double break. He will now serve for the title.
NADAL 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 4-2 MEDVEDEV. Three huge first serves put Nadal firmly in the driving seat, but he then misses a simple volley at the net from point-blank range. Not to worry though, Rafa fans as he comes good with a much more difficult volley to consolidate on the next point.

BREAK! - NADAL 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 3-2 MEDVEDEV. It's been a long while since Nadal made much impact on Medvedev's serve. He hits back from 40-0 down to snare a 17th break point of the match, but a 12th ace from his opponent frustrates him again. The Spaniard keeps going though and finally gets it done with a rasping crosscourt backhand. Wow. What tennis from both players.
NADAL 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 2-2 MEDVEDEV. What a match this is! The variety and the angles on some of the longer rallies is quite superb. Nadal takes the latest lung-buster with an unreal forehand up the line and goes on to hold to 15.
Medvedev having some intense massage of his legs at the sit down. No sign of anything bothering him on court though.
NADAL 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 1-2 MEDVEDEV. No nerves from Medvedev. He drops the first point and throws in a double fault for 40-30, but block a Rafa attempted pass at the net to edge in front.
