GAME, SET AND MATCH! – DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-6 6-2 ZVEREV. Did you ever doubt him? Novak Djokovic comes through a high-quality encounter with Zverev to prevail after three hours and 34 minutes and reach the 2021 US Open final. The Serb ran away with it in the fifth and then fought off a mini revival from the German to break and finally get the job done.
He is now tantalisingly just one win away from completing the calendar Grand Slam. He will meet world number two Daniil Medvedev on Sunday as a man seeking a men’s record 21st major meets a Russian chasing his first.

BREAK! – DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-6 5-2 ZVEREV. Crazy. Djokovic gets super tight but it still takes Zverev FIVE attempts at the break to get it done and that’s via a double fault. The Serb fails to serve it out but it remains a very long way back for Sascha. You feel he's just delaying the inevitable.
DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-6 5-1 ZVEREV. Alexander avoids the bagel but he’ll be bitterly disappointed he couldn’t stay competitive after performing so well for most of the contest. He glides a winner down the line to take the game to 15. Djoker will now serve for the match.
DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-6 5-0 ZVEREV. The world No.1 is one game from the final as he marauds through a ruthlessly efficient love hold.

BREAK! – DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-6 4-0 ZVEREV. The 20-time major winner knows when to crank it up a few gears and he’s done just that in the decider. He fights back from 30-0 down with mesmerising hitting and then some incredible defence forces Sascha to play an extra shot near to the net that he prods long. The German can’t fend off the break point as Mr Elastic makes him play one more shot and he blows the smash long. The No.4 seed can’t believe it. He knows it’s all over now.
DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-6 3-0 ZVEREV. The momentum is all with the world number one now. He just has an innate knack for seizing the important moments. He cruises through a hold to 15 to consolidate with the aid of some superb serving.

BREAK! – DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-6 2-0 ZVEREV. After all of that hard work Zverev implodes at his first service hurdle. He can’t buy a first serve and double faults for 15-30. A smash sees him reach parity but a tight backhand dribbles into the net. Djoker watches it all unfold and then steps on the gas in a 30-shot rally that concludes with the Serb unlocking his opponent with a crosscourt pass.
DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-6 1-0 ZVEREV. The No.4 seed comes out on top in an excellent first point rally. He then blazes a forehand long and it’s all Djokovic from there.

SET! – DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-6 ZVEREV. We are heading into a fifth! The German stays composed as he outlasts Djokovic in a 17-shot rally of great depth before shrugging off another double fault to clock up two set points with a forehand up the line to pick off Nole’s drop shot. A big serve gets the job done and the match is still up for grabs.
DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-5 ZVEREV. Djokovic lashes a forehand wide and there’s a glimmer of a chance for Sascha at 15-30. Djoker retorts with clutch tennis but then makes a strange choice of shot and is made to do it again from deuce. He duly finds a big serve and an overhead. He now has one last chance to bite back. Will Zverev’s nerve hold when it matters most?
DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 3-5 ZVEREV. That’s too sharp. Zverev seals his own love game with a sizzling forehand after an ace and a serve-plus-one had given him plenty of breathing space. He’s just one game from the set.
DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 3-4 ZVEREV. That’s surely one of Novak’s easiest service games. He marauds through a rapid love hold as we enter the business end of the set. Can Zverev keep his nerve to maintain his advantage and force a fifth set?
DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 2-4 ZVEREV. That’s a let off for Zverev. He puts away a couple of smashes with real authority but a sixth double fault and leaky errors off both flanks allow Djoker to turn the screw at deuce. The German looks a bit nervy but responds with a forehand winner before the world number one miscues a very make-able forehand to allow him to wriggle off his hook.
DJOKOVIC 4-6 6-2 6-4 2-3 ZVEREV. Nole surprisingly misfires long on two occasions but it’s ultimately disappointment for Sascha as he goes for broke to make deuce with a backhand that is some way from landing at its target destination down the line.
