2022 US Open men’s singles final result: Carlos Alcaraz beats Casper Ruud to win maiden Grand Slam title and become new World No.1

Aces four and five as well as a 16th winner courtesy of a forehand volley ease Alcaraz on to the board with a very clean hold.

Casper realises he needs to raise the stakes when under pressure and produces a brilliant wrong-footing forehand winner followed by a big first serve to ease out of a tricky 30-30 situation in the opening game of Set 2.

There’s no late twist as Alcaraz closes out a 49-minute opener with a love hold.

Ruud earns himself one last chance to break back with a dominant hold to 15.

Alcaraz will serve for the set next.

Ruud shows great sportsmanship when he points out a missed double bounce by the umpire. It seems it could be good karma when he ups the ante at 15-30, but Alcaraz continues to raise the bar when a question is posed. He cannons down an ace that almost cuts right through Ruud before sealing another hold to 30 with an angled volley and a ferocious backhand up the line.

Ruud motors into a 40-0 lead and then opts for an out of the blue party shot through the legs. It flies harmlessly wide, but he isn’t left ruing the decision as a big serve quickly follows to conclude an efficient game.

Ruud manages to do some damage with the forehand but it’s tad too late to apply any heat. Alcaraz closes out a hold to 30 to maintain his opening set charge.

The Norwegian finally settles into a service game and reels off a rapid love hold to stay firmly in touch.

Ruud threatens the break back when he reads the Alcaraz forehand and guides a reflex block into the open court.

The Spanish starlet responds with a drops-hot forehand winner combo and then sizzles another winner off that flank to consolidate the break the long way around.

The Spaniard strikes first blood!

Ruud cannot buy a consistent first serve at the moment and as a result he comes under huge pressure. The Norwegian coughs up triple break point when Alcaraz beats him with an angled crosscourt volley on the run, and although the 19-year-old lets him off one, a rasping return to the No.5 seed’s feet proves too good on the second.

Ruud turns from defence mode into attack as he pummels a backhand return to tee up two break points. Alcaraz roars backs with three clutch serves before a clinical one-two punch sees him on to board.

It’s very, very early days but that could be significant for Ruud’s belief as this match progresses. The Norwegian fires long off both flanks to see a 30-0 lead evaporate and then has a second serve crushed by the Alcaraz backhand.

Ruud survives with the help of a crisp forehand and then fends off a second break point before digging out the hold with the help of a wonderful point where he just about came out on top at the net.
