Sharapova in tears as she revels in the spotlight once again.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! - SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-6 6-3 HALEP. The Sharapova comeback has finally cranked up a notch as the Russian wins on her return to Grand Slam tennis after a pulsating clash against the No.2 seed. It was a superb battle lasting two hours and 43 minutes. The five-time Grand Slam champion had to save break point but eventually served it out from deuce. And with what looks like a favourable draw ahead on paper, the world No.146 could well go deep into the tournament if she can bring down her unforced error count.

SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-6 4-2 HALEP. The No.2 seed enjoys one her better service game, easily holding to 15 to stay in contention. Big game for Sharapova coming up with the scoreline's similarity to her second set collapse no doubt lingering in her mind right now.

SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-6 4-1 HALEP. Maria keeps unleashing full power and gets lucky with a net cord to hold to 30 after Halep had posed an early question of her serve.

SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-6 3-1 HALEP. Simona gets on the board. Psychologically that was important for herself and for her hopes of putting doubt into Sharapova's mind.

SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-6 3-0 HALEP. A big serve and thumping forehand combo see Maria consolidate to 30. Halep will use the second set as a reminder that the Russian could yet wobble.

BREAK! - SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-6 2-0 HALEP. A clenched fist and a scream of delight from Sharapova as she finally comes through on a break point.

SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-6 1-0 HALEP. After a lengthy bathroom break, Sharapova returns and stops the rot. She holds to 15 to get off on the right note.

SET! - SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-6 HALEP. The Russian comes out all guns blazing but continues to blow her opportunities. Halep somehow survives five break points before a timely first ace is followed by a Howitzer long by Sharapova. That's five games in a row for the Romanian who has seemingly had more lives than a cat defending BPs. It somehow sends us into a decider when Maria looked all set for the locker room not so long ago.

BREAK! - SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-5 HALEP. Simona is a battler, but Sharapova only has herself to blame. The Russian saves double break point, but then succumbs on the third with a double fault. Halep has won four on the spin and will now serve for the set!

SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-4 HALEP. The mix of unforced errors and scorching winners is all part of the Sharapova make-up. Another two BPs go begging and it proves costly as Halep resiliently moves level.

BREAK! - SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-3 HALEP. A horror show from Sharapova as she leaks errors for fun to dump her serve to love. Match on?

SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-2 HALEP. Simona digs herself out of a real mess as she is forced to fend off BP again following ANOTHER return winner. She responds by walloping an all-too rare winner of her own and keeps her hopes alive.

SHARAPOVA 6-4 4-1 HALEP. A quite sublime rally with angles right out of a geometry masterclass has the crowd on their feet. It goes the way of Sharapova, who then overcomes a glitch and saves BP before consolidating from deuce. The former champion is closing in on a shock that isn't really a shock....

BREAK! - SHARAPOVA 6-4 3-1 HALEP. A stonking return winner down the line is followed by a crucial crosscourt forehand as Sharapova takes a firm grip of this match. She's a set and a break to the good and looking in fine fettle.

SHARAPOVA 6-4 2-1 HALEP. Maria looks in a rush at 40-0 but a lucky net cord and a fourth double fault give the Romanian a glimmer of hope before the five-time Grand Slam champion gets the job done to keep her nose in front.

SHARAPOVA 6-4 1-1 HALEP. Simona is defending for her life here. She's staring down the barrel at double break point down, but benefits from some unforced errors off the Russian to wriggle off the hook.

SHARAPOVA 6-4 1-0 HALEP. Sharapova immediately takes the initiative at the start of Set 2, easily holding to 15.

SET! - SHARAPOVA 6-4 HALEP. The Russian takes the opener after a pulsating one-hour battle. Simona double faults at the worst possible time to tee up set point and it's no surprise when Sharapova exposes another sluggish second serve to deservedly move in front. She's been the aggressor throughout, going for her shots and constantly forcing the No.2 seed onto the back foot.

SHARAPOVA 5-4 HALEP. It's a hold to 30 for Maria as she shrugs off some more serving issues with a backhand down the line.

SHARAPOVA 4-4 HALEP. All square as we finally have a hold! Halep still has to dig it out from 30-40 down but will feel pleased with the score given how much she has been overpowered.

BREAK! - SHARAPOVA 4-3 HALEP. Frustration for Sharapova as she once again fails to consolidate. The Russian's power sees her save the first BP to make deuce, but a third double fault of the match hands Halep another chance. The Romanian finds good depth to catch out the world No.146 who can only loop a forehand long.

BREAK! - SHARAPOVA 4-2 HALEP. The Halep serve is given the treatment once more as Sharapova snares a second straight break on her last opportunity off triple break point.

BREAK! - SHARAPOVA 3-2 HALEP. The No.2 seed bites straight back! Sharapova is left ruing a backhand into the net at 40-30 after rallying from 0-30 down. Halep cranks up the heat with a crosscourt forehand winner before halting the Siberian Siren in her tracks by polishing off some smart tennis with a dismissive put-away at the net.

BREAK! - SHARAPOVA 3-1 HALEP. Simona pays the price for a succession of timid second serves as Maria gets her reward for a high octane start by making the breakthrough at the fourth time of asking. Simona has forged her reputation on being one of the game's finest defenders, but she gives herself too much to do and Sharapova's power eventually does the damage.

SHARAPOVA 2-1 HALEP. A delicious drop shot suggests Maria is on song and in the mood for a simple hold - but a 40-15 lead evaporates into a break opportunity for Halep. A stunning crosscourt winner from the Russian ensures she saves it in style before she comes through what turned into a tricky service game from the umpteenth deuce.

SHARAPOVA 1-1 HALEP. Solid work from Halep to level it up. Both players exchanging blows that suggest this has real potential to be a cracker....

SHARAPOVA 1-0 HALEP. Some big serving and crunching winners gets the Russian out a tricky situation at 15-30 to get on the board. Early signs of rust blown away by two concluding points that were played as if she'd never been away.

Sharapova will serve first....
