Serena Williams seeded 17th at US Open, Rafael Nadal men's top seed

Serena Williams has been seeded 17th at this year's US Open one place below her sister Venus, while Rafael Nadal has been confirmed as the top seed in the men's draw.

Serena is ranked at number 26 in the world, nine places below the seeding she has been awarded for the final Grand Slam of the season.
The current WTA rankings are the usual criteria to decide seeding in the women's draw, but her seeding has been bumped up, as expected.
The six times champion in New York will turn 37 next month and missed out last year because of pregnancy but is now back targeting her first Grand Slam since the birth of her child.
Simona Halep is the top seed in the women's draw with defending champion Sloane Stephens at number three, ahead of Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber, who won at Flushing Meadows in 2016.

World number one and defending champion Rafa Nadal was named top seed in the men's draw, ahead of Roger Federer and Argentine Juan Martin del Porto in second and third respectively.
Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, who appears to have finally shaken off his persistent elbow injury, is seeded sixth, while last year's runner-up, South African Kevin Anderson, is seventh.
Britain's Kyle Edmund is seeded 16th, while Andy Murray is unseeded after battling back from his prolonged injury nightmare.
