It was a mixed day for British tennis as Heather Watson crashed out at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, but Johanna Konta defeated the 14th seed to progress.

Watson blew three match points as she lost 2-6 7-5 6-4 to qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak while fellow Brit Naomi Broady also bowed out in the opening round.

But Konta ensured there was home interest in the draw with a comfortable 6-3 6-1 win over Japan’s Kurumi Nara.
