The injury came during Sharapova's second-round match against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni at the Italian Open.
The former world number one has not played since then which has stalled her comeback from a doping suspension which has seen her work her way back up to 178 in the world.
The BBC report that an official announcement on Sharapova missing the event is expected in the coming days.
