Medina Garrigues defends Palermo title
Third seed Anabel Medina Garrigues collected the third singles title of her career with the defence of the Palermo International title on Sunday. The Spaniard completed a 6-4 6-0 victory over Czech fifth seed Klara Koukalova having trailed 4-2 in the first set.
"Palermo is a good tournament for me; I feel at home," said Medina, who also won the tournament in 2001.
"The match was not so easy, especially in the first set, I was down 4-2 but then I fought and I won the set."
"I'm very happy to have been in the final," said Koukalova, winner of one title from five finals.
"Anabel played very well and I was just a little tired. In the first set I was leading 4-2 but then she came back and plays very well.
"I'm happy anyway because it is my sixth final and I won my first tournament this year. Now I will go to the US, playing in San Diego, Los Angeles and preparing for the US Open."
Medina, ranked world number 30, is just three spots shy of her career-high.
"I'm happy to be No.1 in Spain but Conchita (Martinez) and Arantxa (Sanchez-Vicario) are still the best," said Medina.
"They were No.1 for 18 years, but they never won the Palermo tournament three times!"
