The 2003 world championships ended with surprise men's and women's winners. German Henrik Stehlik beat Olympic champion Alexandre Moshalenko on a tie-break after they finished level on points. Karen Cockburn of Canada won the women's competition.

Women's Olympic champion Irina Karavaeva finished seventh but was in excellent form early this year.

The women's competition in Athens will be held on August 20, with the men's the following day.
