Rosie Morris, Lisa Gibson, Angie Winstanley-Smith, Francesca Clayton, Ciara Gibson-Byrne, Hazel Musgrove, Chloe Wilcox and Fiona McCann have all made the cut after making history as part of Britain's first ever women's team at an Olympics at London 2012.
Robyn Nicholls was also part of the squad in the capital but is one of five reserves to be called up in case of injury with Britain's women last appearing at the World Championships in 2003.
Britain's seventh-place finish at the European Championships last year has been enough to secure them qualification for the world equivalent and performance director Thompson wants to build on such a foundation in Barcelona.
"This is an exciting time for British Water Polo, returning to the World Championships for the first time since 2003 to continue the excellent progress made by the team in recent years," said Thompson.
"Selection has been really difficult this year, which is a pleasing aspect and reflects a growing competition for places in the squad. There are some new faces on the team who join some of our experienced players.
"We are now looking to work hard as a team, adjust to our new line up and make the best preparations possible for the competition in Barcelona."
Final British squad: Rosie Morris, Lisa Gibson, Angie Winstanley-Smith, Francesca Clayton, Ciara Gibson-Byrne, Hazel Musgrove, Chloe Wilcox, Fiona McCann, Peggy Etiebet, Jade Smith, Kathryn Fowler, Aine Hoy, Claire Nixon.
