Italy revamps controversial WRC route

Stung by criticism that there was not enough action to keep the drivers occupied last year, the organisers of the Sardinian event have put together the longest and most arduous Saturday of the season.

The event's second full day will include 126 competitive miles, with a tyre change mid-way through the morning and afternoon loop.

The crews will return to the service park in Alghero on Saturday lunchtime to split the 10-stage, 14-hour day.

The route was designed by two-time world champion co-driver Tiziano Siviero, who partnered Miki Biasion to the 1988 and '89 WRC titles.

"We wanted to build a real marathon for Saturday and it will certainly be the longest day in the championship," said Siviero.

The controversial Thursday night Cagliari spectator stage remains this year, but the cars will remain in the island's capital overnight, with stages planned on the way back up from Cagliari to Alghero on Friday.

Sunday's finale offers a further four tests and 35 miles of competition.

In total, the June 11-14 event comprises 24 stages and 251 timed miles.
