Latvala relying on weather for win

The running order has been debated throughout rally week on this penultimate round of the WRC, with the FIA refusing to give the teams the reversed classification they repeatedly requested.

On a gravel rally, the running order is based on a reverse of the classification of the 'priority' cars, forcing slower drivers to sweep the loose stones clear for the faster drivers starting later on.

The FIA has insisted that the Rally of Spain is officially recognised as an asphalt event, which dictates that the running order is not reversed.

Latvala goes into the final day with a 1.6-second advantage over Sordo. The Finn said: "I need a little bit of support from the weather tomorrow.

"I think the first car on the road can win this rally, but if there is no dust [obscure visibility for the drivers following behind] and no moisture on the road then I can't win.

"I need a little bit of something from the weather."

The ideal conditions for Latvala would be heavy overnight rain to or dry and absolutely still conditions to keep the dust hanging.

The forecast for Sunday, which includes four all-gravel stages and one mixed-surface test, is dry.
