The Estonian had been running third, behind Dani Sordo and Sebastien Loeb, when his Yaris WRC slowed half-way through the 30km pass of Guanajuatito 1.
The Finland-based Japanese firm suffered with overheating engines from the opening day's stages on Friday.
Tanak and team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Esapekka Lappi had to switch off the Anti-Lag System on their cars to avoid failures.
This resulted in a significant drop in power output with Tanak claiming he "only had 20 horsepower" when he reached the end of SS11.
Lappi crashed in SS7 while an alternator failure stopped Latvala's progress at the end of a frustrating Friday for the team.
Toyota is trying to get Tanak out for Sunday's loop with a view to taking crucial Power Stage points, but confirmed that the Estonian will not return on Saturday.
Tanak entered the third round of the season holding fifth place in the championship, 20 points behind Hyundai's Thierry Neuville.
