During the final minutes of the session, the Italian completed a lap of 1:25.497, ousting the BMW Team Germany duo of Augusto Farfus (1:25.554) and Joerg Mueller, who was just one thousandth of a second slower.
Former champion Andy Priaulx (1:25.737) and reigning champion Yvan Muller (1:25.883) were fourth and fifth fastest ahead of Rickard Rydell, who was the first man to go under one minute 26 seconds.
Nicola Larini was the fastest of the Chevrolet men, guiding his new Cruze car to the ninth best time, while Proteam Motorsport's Félix Porteiro topped the Independents' class with a time of 1:26.785 for 11th position overall and Jaap van Lagen was the best of the Lada entrants in 17th.
